i just wanted to share my favourites parts of some of her songs!! this is basically a yapping session! i'll go by albums or else it's going to be a big mess! i will probably update this from time to time if i find new parts i love!
☆ tidal
sullen girl: this whole song is just so melancholic, the piano is perfect. "but he washed me 'shore / and he took my pearl / and left an empty shell of me" such a beautiful metaphor for the horrible act of raping someone. i feel like it could almost be seen as a euphemism.
shadowboxer: her. voice. especially in the chorus towards the end (3:43), it just holds so much emotions, it goes so well with the piano in the background, and the way she says "swinging", i don't know why i love it so much.
criminal: one of her most known song and for a reason!! the part in the middle of this song is perfect (2:48), her voice is so raw, the allusions to religion ("before there's hell to pay", "what would an angel say the devil wants to know") are so good.
the first taste: "darling just start the chase / i'll let you win / but you must make the endeavor" do i even have to explain?
☆ when the pawn...:
on the bound: "nothing i do don't do nothing but bring me more to do ; it's true i do imbue my blue onto myself, i make it better" oh. my. god. the alliteration in "o" and "u" is so powerful, it gives a feeling of getting dragged, almost like it's impossible to escpae these bad habits. it sounds so good i beg you to listen to it.
to your love: "please forgive me for my distance / the pain is evident in my existence" literally me.
limp: the raw anger (emotion in general) makes this song. one of my fav. i looove the use of the instruments too. "you fondle my trigger / then you blame my gun" how many times have women experienced this? someone (mostly men) do something we don't like, try to push our boundaries and then call us "hysterical" when we react.
love ridden: "no, not 'baby' anymore / if i need you, i'll just use your simple name / only kisses on the cheeks from now on / and in a little while we'll only have to wave" the graduation of acts of love from close to distant?? hello??? translates this feeling of losing someone/putting distance perfectly.
a mistake: "i wanna make a mistake / why can't i make a mistake?" the sheer desperation in her voice.
get gone:"how can i fight, when we're on the same side?" did i just get shot??? like okay??? no need to be so real???
"how many times can it escalate / till it elevates to a place i can't breathe?" i just wanted to add this one because i love it, i'll add something later!
i know: one of her most beautiful songs. everything is just perfect, her voice is so calm yet full of emotions. the last sentence "it's okay, don't need to say it" is so simple yet so powerful. masterpiece.
☆ extraordinary machine:
this album is so slept on, my fav!!
extraordinary machine: "everybody cares and wears the sheep's clothes while they chaperone" to chaperone = '
accompany and look after or supervise', however they're wearing "sheep's clothes". even if her friends/partners help her, she feels like it's not enough/that they're not a 100% sincere.
get him back: i just loooove this song, it makes me want to dance somehow. the music and rythm are perfect.
o' sailor:
the change form "saying there's nothing to it / as it goes by the boards" to
"giving me eyes to view it / as it goes by the boards" erm... okay?? "by the boards" = she feels like she's not apart of something, "saying there's nothing to it" = she was promised everything was fine. she's being lied to and was left to witness it "giving my eyes to view it". sorry if this is messy it's late lol.
better version of me: "i'm a frightened, cryin', fickle person / fightin', cryin', kickin', cursin'" i love this part so much. i'll try to explain it later too.
tymphs (the sick in the head song): love the instruments on this one!!
parting gift: the. chorus. her. voice. "and you looked as sincere as a dog / just as sincere as a dog does / when it's the food on yours lips, with which it's in love" again, did i just get shot??? one of my favs!
window: her voice crack around 3:40. chills. one of the reasons i did this blog. i'm begging you to listen to it.
oh well: "what wasted unconditional love / on somebody / who doesn't believe in the stuff" not much technic here but it's still so so so so so powerful. another one of my favs.
red red red: the comparisons to colors at the start of the songs!
☆ the idler wheel...:
every single night: her voice (again, i know. she's just that good), i also looove the way the drums (if i'm right), goes from on ear to the other (mainly the left one).
daredevil: i love the piano!
valentine: the repetition of "you". simple yet i love it so much.
werewolf: the comparisons throughout the whole song??? "i could like to a werewolf the way you left me for dead / but i admit that i provided a full moon" they're all so beautiful yet sad. and don't get me started on the screams at the end. chills. "but we can still support each other / all we got to do is avoid each other"
hot knife: "if i'm butter, then he's a hot knife" simple yet so meaningful. i also love how fast (it's not very fast but still) she goes at the start and the different voice above the others.
☆ fetch the bolt cutters:
i want you to love me: the piano is so beautiful on this one. i love every part of it and i'm so glad it got attention on tiktok. one of my favs. i love her small screams at the end too!
shameika: i don't know if it's the instruments or if it's real cries but oh my god these are my favourite part of this song. one of my favs too!
under the table: "kick me under the table all you want / i won't shut up / i won't shut up / i won't shut up"
under the table: "evil is a relay sport / when the one who's burnt / turns to pass the torch" repeating as more voices are added?? love it.
ladies: i love her voice on this voice. it's so smooth. one of my favs!
for her: just listen to it. the different voices above the others. so powerful.
this is all i have for now!! sorry if i made mistakes/if i repeat myself too much but it's late and i'm too lazy to correct them. i got kind of lazy in the end as you can see.
i love how if you listen to her albums in order (which you should totally do) you can see her music evolve. she's a lyrical genius, a talented pianist and her voice holds so much emotions. her music saved me.

i love fiona apple so much, i think one of my favourite things about her is how raw and brutally honest her lyricism is, i find her music really cathartic. people always describe her as intimidating but listening to her music and reading/watching her interviews made me feel the opposite, i cant explain, i feel like shes a personal friend who i always talk to.
thanks!! i feel so represented by her music, it's like she's speaking directly to my soul!
