૮₍´˶• . • ⑅ ₎ა hello jumenation . . .  !!

*ೃ༄ . . .

i'm gonna rant about the stupid phone ban policy that my school put in place because i got caught with a trap phone LOL

it honestly pisses me off to no end because why the hell are y'all banning phones as a way to counter bad test scores when the real problem is the horrible, outdated curriculum that teachers are obligated to teach? from the style of teaching to the content that is being taught, all of it is outdated and to treat students like criminals for having their phones instead of just taking care of the actual problems?

and speaking about problems. if the phone was such an issue, the district should have just ordered teachers to take phones before class started and give it back to students when class ended.

in my case, students are not allowed to use phones neither before school starts, nor during lunch or other non-class activities. this, to me, is stupid because what we do outside of school on our phones, does not affect test scores (since i know that that's the only thing they care about). speaking for LAUSD in particular, they sent kids to school during bad weather conditions, even during the LA fires or two years ago when we had really bad floods, so i know for a fact they don't give a single crap about the students' lives.

some students have undocumented parents and those parents need to be able to reach their kids in the case that something happens (because of the current administration), some students have parents with health issues, or have health issues themselves ー how do you expect these students to reach their parents or vice versa if something like that were to happen?

and for those that say "they can just call the office", respectfully, screw that. the reason parents give their kids phones is because its faster than calling the office or going through any of that.

and lets say we did put our phones in the pouch and follow everything. kids are now using their school-issued computers instead. which means that despite the phone ban, the issue is still not being addressed and schools are wasting their money on the stupid pouches.

final thoughts : i'm insanely mad at the fact that they will spend money on anything BUT mental health services for students.

i'm gonna crash out dawg .

I'm sorry, but as someone who recently graduated from high school last June, I myself am in full support of cellphone bans in public schools. I have seen way too many of my colleagues become complete zombies to them and seemingly unable to put them down for 5 minutes to focus on what the teacher is saying and concentrate on the tasks they're supposed to be focusing on because of the damned cellphones.

Not too long ago, cellphones used to be banned inside the classroom, and this was even back in the days of simple flip phones that weren't so addictive. So why the hell have these bans recently been lifted/hardly if ever enforced in the day and age of increasingly addictive smartphones? Admin must be getting too lazy to properly do their jobs, it seems.

Hell, I once almost got in trouble for using a calculator outside during lunch while I was in middle school one day in early 2019 because an administrator walking by thought it was a cellphone until I showed her that it was just a simple little pink calculator, so it wasn't too long ago where cellphone use during school hours was (rightfully) frowned upon.

And if you're truly concerned about the mental health crisis plaguing teens since 2010 or so, just know that it is highly linked to the rise of smartphone and social media usage in adolescents. I'm not saying that this is the be all, end all for addressing the teen mental health crisis in the United States, but it is a good start. There's a saying in medicine that goes "prevention is always better than the cure", and while not all cases of teen mental illnesses are linked to smartphone/social media usage, there's still a good amount of evidence from recent years linking the 2 for many mentally ill teens to justify such measures.

i totally get that honestly and i dont mind the ban itself but instead the way the admins are handling it. for my freshman - junior year, every teacher had their own policies on the phones so some teachers would enforce it, others wouldnt. i wouldn't have minded if all my classes had banned cellphones in class because i understand how addicting they are and how distracting they can be, especially in class.

however, they decided to implement this in the middle of the year (which feels pretty stupid to me as a senior since we're graduating anyways so whats the point yk?) and also the fact that my school literally has kids selling drugs in school and smoking in the admins faces while they do nothing, yet they're willing to search you all for a phone?

in my case, my school has much bigger addictions to pay attention to than cellphone addictions (but thats just my perspective). im not against the ban because i can go without it, im not addicted to it, but at its core i want to have access to it for my safety.

i live in the us, my school is 90% latino and with the current administration, i feel unsafe literally everywhere. if i can call my family to tell them ice happens to be near or record to document interactions with law enforcement, i would absolutely violate the rules for my personal safety.

i appreciate your opinion though and i completely agree that phones do make an impact on mental health. my reasons for opposing some aspects of the phone ban are more personal but i know many others in my school who also break the rules for their safety.

thanks for commenting and being respectful, i appreciate it !
