Old Japanese Legend

I'm not one to easily believe in ghosts, honestly, because I happen to have hallucinations here and there - so I tend to avoid speculating over nothing. It can be hard to spot the difference between what's in our minds and what isn't, this to me is a sensitive topic.

The legend I'm talking about is from the Edo period, and it's not just a legend - it's also a game.

It really caught my interest, it's about the "100 days ghost stories" (or "Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai").
The legend goes that if you read,hear or tell  to someone a ghost story every day for 100 days, after the 100th day you will be in contact with the spirit world. This may seem like nothing but some of these stories can be hard to stomach, or straight up sad.

There's two ways to do this;

1) You can tell to someone or read all 100 stories in one sitting, at nightfall, and be done with it there and then. For this, people would light up 100 lanterns or candles and one of these would be blown out after a story was told, until they were left in the dark.

2) You can simply tell to someone or read a story per day by candlelight, and blow it out once you're done and just go to sleep.

There are no specific stories to tell, you can just make them up. But they have to be serious, they can't be too childish or funny.

I remember reading a blog on another site (I believe it was a Line blog but I may be mistaken). In the blog one person described this game as unsettling and claimed they left it incomplete because it was too hard to keep going.

I guess the possible outcomes are many.. including; being able to see ghosts in the end, opening a third eye, getting haunted for life (hurray!), losing your marbles on this, orr (best of all) you just have fun with your friends and make it an experience. I personally believe that last one more.

If you choose to try this and something does happen, I am NOT responsible. Good luck you ghost lovers!

(Quick side note, I think it's interesting to think about the people in the Edo period playing the game with you somewhere on the timeline. I really like that thought.)
