I've been waiting for SteamOS to be officially released, but I got impatient... So I installed Arch Linux with KDE Plasma onto that laptop from some older blog posts (02 and 11). I actually quite like it! It was easy to install, it is quite easy to use, and after some configuring, looks quite nice too!

It makes me feel much better about Windows 10 support ending, because I'd rather take a baseball bat to my PC than use Windows 11 :) There's a good chance SteamOS 3.0 officially releases around Windows 10's end-of-support, but in any case I hope it's within the next couple months!

not really knowledgeable with steamos so bare with me
will/is steamos suited for pc's/desktops or only really for the steam deck
ive been looking around for alternatives becaue i too fucking hate w11, ive kinda decided on mint as thats what i run on my laptop so ill be familiar with the suit, but if steamos will be designed with "gaming" in mind ill probs go with that (given its actually viable for desktops come october)
valve is currently working on making an official release for desktop environments for steamOS! there's a good chance it's out this year given that lenovo is now selling a SteamOS handheld. the interface is actually really intuitive and i'm looking forward to switching once it's officially out :-)

also mint is a good choice! it was actually really easy for me to set up arch with the KDE Plasma environment using a video called "Arch Linux: A Comfy Install Guide" but there's no harm in going for something you feel more confident with :-)
