Boots With the Fur

The song “Low” by Flo Rida is famous—well at least T-Pain’s chorus. The lyrics are well-known:

Apple bottom jeans / Boots with the fur / The whole club lookin’ at her / She hit the flo’ / Next thing you know / Shawty got low low low low low low low.

To most, these lyrics might not seem like the grounds for vicious debate to take place, but you’d be surprised to know that people can’t agree on what “boots with the fur” means. Are the boots covered in fluffy fur? Do the boots just have a rim of fur at the top? Are the boots Uggs? Are the boots not furry at all, and the “fur” actually refers to a separate item of clothing entirely?

To solve this mystery, the most useful source is T-Pain’s Twitter (or X if you want to be pedantic). First of all, it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that the boots aren’t furry. Before the 2024 Super Bowl, in preparation for her performance of the national anthem, Reba McEntire posted a photo of herself sporting a fur coat, skinny jeans, and cowboy boots. The caption of the post was:

Boots with the fur…#SuperBowlLVIII ready!

The next day, T-Pain reposted McEntire’s tweet and wrote:

The whole club lookin at herrrrrrrrr.

To me this response shows that the “fur” being a separate piece of clothing is a viable option. However, it can be reasonably deduced that the fur piece in question can’t be a full coat otherwise the iconic apple logo on the back pockets of the apple bottom jeans would be covered. So the fur must be a shawl or cropped jacket of some kind.

T-Pain’s tweets offer another hint to this mystery. In 2018 a random person on the internet tweeted:

The girl Flo Rida sings about in Low was wearing apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur, baggy sweatpants, AND reeboks with the straps all at the same time so we must conclude that she was, in fact, a centaur. In this essay I will

In response to this tweet, T-Pain commented:

The first girl is dressed how Flo Rida likes. Second girls is dressed how I like. Flo likes a classy lady. I like a lazy bitch.

This implies that whatever kind of boots with/and fur are classy. This would eliminate Uggs and full fur rave-style boots.

So let's cover what we know so far: If the boots have fur, they’re boots with a rim of fur at the top. If the fur is a separate piece it must not fall below the waist. And if the fur is a separate piece, that leaves the type of boots completely undescribed.

What do you think? Do you think one option is more likely than the other? Do you think there’s another viable option that’s completely different? Let me know!
