frankenstein by mary shelley: a book ramble

ok i kinda wanna make book reviews bc i read a whole lot bc of school and my friends, so here’s the first one

also review is a loose term im more of just my thoughts about it

frankenstein (the 1818 text) by mary shelley

to start off, i love gothic lit. i read wuthering heights two years ago and fell in love. so i went into this knowing id love it. i also read it for school, with my history class while learning about early modern medicine and anatomy. 

i always find the narrator style of these old books odd, but i think shelley manages to make it useful. framing it as a warning rather than just a story really drives home the message. the message too!! knowing there was a guy who was electrocuting bodies to make them look alive at the time she wrote this is important. 

the upbringing of the creature is so cruel too. like imagine being born and ur dad screams at you and kicks you out (you don’t have a mom) and then you go live in the woods and help a family, but they see you and chase you out of town, then you help a kid and get shot for it. i’d turn evil too. however, frankenstein’s actions after seeing the creature are very human. i too would scream if a guy made out of dead bodies tried to hug me. but just cuz they were human doesn’t make it right.

i really liked reading it and also the second i finished it my tumblr dash turned into just frankenstein posts and idk why or how it knew
