HI okay soooo I have this little section of a story I've been working on and I'm looking for some thoughts on it ^^ any criticism is appreciated!!
I kicked a small rock along the vast, cracked-open pavement. Without sidewalks, the flimmering street lamps were buried in the grass. My favorite, one of the few that didn’t ever flicker, stood next to a bench about two meters from the road.
I always wondered why they’d put a fancy park bench in the most vacant area in town, but I never bothered asking. I sat down to start reading, which at this point in my life had become a daily ritual. Sometimes in the pouring rain with only an umbrella to cover one of my few books. I could get lost in the same stories every single time without fail, pushing any thought of my father aside.
Right as I flipped open the first page, a flicker spread across it, and before I had time to register it, the bulb above me gave out.
My vision hastily adjusted. The darkness felt suffocatingly empty and shallow, a void with only lamps, seeming hundreds of meters apart, all sparkling in unison.
I let out a heavy sigh, I wasn’t about to go back home. I pulled the hood of my old raincoat over my face and lent deeper into my seat. Not wanting to inconvenience my father any further, I decided to stay outside and let my mind start wandering, instead of going home.
Telling stories to myself was nothing new to me. Maybe I’d stay here, not getting up until the sun rises. I didn’t want to open my eyes to a cold way home. Much to my misfortune- I didn’t have to.
A bright light shot right through the fabric of my coat and my eyelids. The lamp seemed to be working again. It wasn’t ever this bright though. I yanked the hood off my eyes. The lamp stood as still and black as before. In front of me, on the strained old street shone what looked to be a small puddle of oil, a strange, painfully glimmering, deep purple. It definitely wasn’t there earlier. I pulled my legs up to my body. This strange liquid seemed to be producing that light. I looked around, searching for an absurd explanation, maybe a truck I simply didn’t hear, but I knew there was none.
