NEW ALBUMS

The Lemon of Pinks - The Books | 2003 | suggested by FISH THE MUSIC NERD

folktronica | sound collage

★★★½

this album is exactly what nostalgia sounds like. listening to this feels like someone's life flashing before your eyes, like you're reminiscing a life that you've never lived. Take Time in particular sounds like it was ripped straight from a coming of age movie. the use of sampled vocals in various different languages throughout emphasize the vibe of reliving a life you didn't live, it makes it feel just like you're peering into other people's memories. this was a really beautiful experience, definitely a great album to return to to unwind. i'll probably come back to this eventually, whenever i feel like i need it most. in my opinion this album is also extremely accessible, and i'd even say this is a great starting place for people who wanna dip their toes into some weirder stuff. this might be the best rec i've ever gotten

for people considering getting into meditation

Vigilante -  Willie Colón & Héctor Lavoe | 1983 | suggested by gmailluvr2272

salsa dura

★★★

there's something about salsa that just makes me so jolly. this does that, but it also sounds exactly like you'd hope an album called Vigilante would sound like. i've never seen the movie this was made for nor do i know spanish, but you can immediately tell what a perfect glimpse into that world this album is. the title track is so cinematic and the orchestra is absolutely amazing, it stands out with it's incredible swell and building of tension. the other 3 tracks are pretty standard sounding salsa to someone who isn't extremely familiar with the genre, but they're damn good salsa. this is probably the best salsa experience i've had

for white people taco lovers

From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots -  Dälek | 2002 | suggested by s0n1k_dud3

industrial hip hop | abstract hip hop | experimental hip hop

★★★

i'm pretty sure i've seen this before but the rec pushed me to check it out. i see this taking the same trajectory as death grips, which is i think it's pretty good the first time and then it keeps getting better every time i go back. there's a lot i really liked about this - mc dälek's delivery is fantastic and the beats are all really great, overall i think this is one i just need more time with. i don't really pay attention to lyrics much on first listens  so i'm thinkin that might be part of it. Black Smoke Rises was easily my standout, focusing mostly on its instrumental which is composed of noisy, droning synths. i also have to give credit where it's due, this feels super ahead of its time. crazy that this came out in 2002. also does not at all feel like it's an hour long

for people who cried about death grips breaking up (me)

No Certain Night or Morning - Home Video | 2006 | suggested by scumbercuclumber on rym

indietronica

★★★

this gets a lot of radiohead comparisons and i see why. the vocals are VERY thom yorke at times (not that that's a bad thing) and this does feel pretty The King of Limbs and kind of atoms for peace, but like, the boring parts. one of the reasons i love tkol so much is because of how different it is from the rest of radiohead. while this certainly isn't a bad effort - basing your sound off of two albums i love kinda automatically means i won't hate it - but it's a very watered down version of those albums. i think this can still scratch an itch for the people who want more radiohead

for gigachads (tkol likers)

Portraits of Past - Portraits of Past | 1996 } suggested by TIGERLUCKI

screamo

★★★½

TECHNICALLY i was recommended the Discography compilation but i decided to check out this album on its own first since this is featured on there in full and i'd rather experience the original thing first. screamo is yet another genre i'm acutely aware of but not very familiar with and i think this is a serviceable introduction. this album is bleak, it's dull and also incredibly sharp at the same time which works well in its favor. for better or for worse it's very consistent, but for someone like me who isn't tapped in like that it leads to a lot of the songs sounding very similar

for teenagers who laugh when they walk past a spencer's

  2. Bang Yer Head
  3. The Control Freak

Transa - Caetano Veloso | 1972 | suggested by Esteban

mbp | singer-songwriter

★★★

I LOVE BRAZIL!!!!!!!

for a neanderthal like me who only speaks english, veloso's songwriting obviously only really jumps out in the english songs but from what i've gathered based on extensive research (reading rym reviews), this album is a criticism of the brazilian government after veloso was exiled from the country. the stripped down instrumentals serve to enhance the vocals and lyrics (that i could understand) and it makes it all feel so raw and natural.

for the Thinkers

  2. Nine Out of Ten ★
  3. Triste Bahia
  4. It's a Long Way

Радио Африка [Radio Africa] - Аквариум [Aquarium] | 1983 | suggested by agent_smith

art rock | new wave | psychedelic rock

★★★½

starts off VERY. slowly. was a big slog until like halfway through which isn't great, but that second half is a sizeable jump in quality. russian music is always fun because russian is always just such a fun language to listen to, there's something about it that's always just itched my brain in the right spot. the vocals were consistently very fun, and the more repetitive tracks were actually among my favorites which i don't think happens often. basically i can't bring myself to hate jazz fusion.
