1.2
we wanted all these
living in our small town.
church every Sunday
but it doesn’t feel like Jesus even knows we're here.
he'd pass through us like the mouse in your bedroom
harmless and oh.
he'd brush your hair from your eyes say “darling you're bleeding
but i’m not stopping by.”
Jesus was like your Dad in the army
who we all saw framed
surrounded by the flowers from your garden
in the pouring rain.
Jesus cried
and cried
and cried
seeing a soldier fall
and still oh why oh why oh why
is he not here at all?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
i'd sleep on the floor with my bible next to me
playing your voicemails on repeat and pretending you could see.
I left you outside cause we can't be together.
so you wanna rip through the curtain and
be with God forever.
i’d walk up the stairs to your old house,
broken chairs still outside
you’d be crying by the fire and burning old songs u wrote
from when your Daddy had died
saying that he lied
and he lied
and he lied.
i said a God is watching you.
so what will you do?
and still you cried.

4.1
her hair would move like she was dancing with him
but her legs stayed still and she could not blink
he'd kick her knees to make her fall
and he'd tie those beads to the wall
and peering through the broken lock in ur door
i saw her body move like her hair on the floor
with her hands to her heart
always she'd pray
crying straight to Jesus to live another day
or she'd miss his cold breath on her dying skin
and the way he blew to make her spin
and she asked if God would treat her the same way
