Otherkin on the web, mid 2010s

Short post, but I would love to talk to more people who identified as otherkin or fictionkin around ~2014-17, especially if you no longer identify as that anymore.

I thought about carrionflowerkin (PLEASE comment if you remember) and just had so many memories come back about the time… all the drama, but also all the fun. Silliness… some straight up unsolved mental illness…. deep escapist fantasies

I identified as otherkin and fictionkin very strongly, and definitely fabricated “kin memories”. I’m really interested to know how deeply you committed and if you “came out” to people as otherkin. What led you to your former kin types? What feelings stuck around and what didn’t? Can you still make sense of your former kin feelings, or has it all just kind of dissipated?

Those who currently identify as otherkin, feel free to share when you found out about it and your experience in the online community during your time identifying as otherkin.

Thanks for reading :)

I identify as fictionkin and therian, don't really take it as seriously as a lot of people do and don't bring much attention to it unless it's relevant. But I am schizo* and have multiple personalities so I think I'm just mentally ill and it's a product of that mainly. "Reality" is different for everyone and everyone's realities are filtered through their brain's processing, as long as you aren't hurting anyone or yourself or using *kin stuff to enable bad behaviors or thought patterns I never really see an issue with it at all

I agree, i think otherkin and therianism are very cool and still relate to them in some way. I was a lot less mentally stable and going through tough shit when my kin feelings were at their height.
It is a really interesting topic because talking about our personal realities like this is very cool, but bound to lead to chaos or unintentional hurt. Especially with a population that is more prone to mental illness (?) To be otherkin is very personal, and I remember feeling attacked or driven to panic just by seeing "doubles". I would love to hear more about your time online then.

I do care about doubles but not in the same way most do. I believe in the multiverse and all that shit, the piece of media your kintype is from is just one of the millions of universes in which they exist, same with doubles, so it doesn't bother me in a "WTF that is ME You are saying that you are ME" type way... I just got NPD which makes me incredibly jealous and angry about it. but I'm an adult so I don't think about it much and just block and move on with my time. never really interacted with the greater *kin community online much (You know how the internet was back then and the obsession with "SJWs") so not much to say about that honestly...I was just kind of watching from the sidelines making fun of them out loud but thinking to myself "Damn I kinda relate doe"

i don't think i identify as otherkin as much as i identify as a shapeshifter in a more actually spiritual sense and i strongly dislike the limits everybody keeps trying to put on each other

I would love to hear more about shapeshifting for you! i think this is a term that will come up more in my research
