with enough tinkering, older software works great! i've been using windows 7, MacOS X snow leopard, and an iphone 4 on iOS 4 semi regularly, and the things I can do on them are amazing.
windows 7 can be updated with legacyupdate.net, hacktivated with certain methods, works with a LOT of basic modern software on their latest versions (winamp, winrar), and firefox ESR 115 works perfectly fine as a web browser and has the most support out of any software from this era.
Mac OS X 10.6 works… semi-regularly. sadly, it wasn't supported as long as win 7 was, so your software options are a lot more limited. Arctic fox works as a browser (albeit not as well as firefox on win 7), and some older software versions work pretty well; older apple software does work great though!
iOS 4 is sadly dead due to the discontinuation of 3G support. there is no way to get data/calling working, but with enough jailbreaks you can get the youtube app, AOL IM via nina (i believe, haven't tried it out just yet), and the most basic of basic web browsing working, but you'd be better off just using it as an MP3 player at that point.
Even older software than this can be revived today! So this post is here to encourage you to dust off any old electronics you have lying around and use them! (Though security concerns are still a thing, so keep that in mind)
