I use yt-dlp, which you can download from Git Hub: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp
I highly recommend this version if you don't wanna risk viruses and whatever else those sketchy youtube to mp3 sites be doing.
Just go to the Git Hub link, go to the installation section and download the version you need under the recommended section. Once you install it on your computer, you can start downloading YouTube videos in whatever file format you want! MP3s, MP4s, WAV, literally anything.
The only downside is that you need to know the commands and type them out in Command Prompt (for Windows) or Terminal (for MAC) since there is no GUI. But don't worry! If you just wanna download mp3s, the command is very simple and intuitive!
All commands follow this basic format: yt-dlp [OPTIONS] [--] URL [URL...]
So when you open your terminal, to download a YouTube video as an mp3, you would use this command:
yt-dlp -f bestaudio -x --audio-format mp3 URL
Just replace URL with your YouTube video's URL.
If you want, you can simplify it to:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 URL
For mp4s:
yt-dlp -f bestvideo+bestaudio URL
You can also play around and learn more commands and such to further customize your download, like --embed-subs which embeds subtitles into mp4, webm and mkv videos.
The downloaded file will likely save in the "Users" folder in your C drive - shown as OS(C:) in File Explorer on Windows.
This doesn't take long to set up, and once you get used to it it's incredibly convenient and you don't have to worry about viruses like you do with other methods. I use this all the time for mp3s for my mp3 player, and mp4s.
like I try entering the command in an instance of cmd prompt but it says it's unrecognized command and I just don't know enough abt how cmd prompt works to figure it out :v
if it's giving that error it means either the command isn't typed correctly or yt-dlp isn't installed.
i just looked over the installation instructions and i forgot that there's another program, FFmpeg, that is highly recommended to have installed to make sure yt-dlp runs. It's required for merging separate video and audio files.
After installing yt-dlp and FFmpeg, I created a folder called "yt-dlp" in OS(C:) and dragged ffmpeg.exe and yt-dlp.exe in there.
Hold up, I found a tutorial on reddit that explains everything a lot better ToT
These are the installation instructions for Windows. They also then give some basic commands on how to use yt-dlp.
Sorry for all the hassle. I forgot there were a couple more steps that aren't clearly outlined in the installation guide on Git Hub. (You can skip step 4 if you already have WinRAR or something similar)
TLDR; i think you're just missing FFmpeg and need to put the ffmpeg.exe and yt-dlp.exe files in OS(C:) > yt-dlp
