nostalgia cannot be stronger than creativity

i think that 2000s & 2010s tech is great specifically because it doesn't get in the way of creativity as much as more recent tech, as much as social media & things like it (my CD player that connects to FM radio is leagues better than Spotify, to me), but i also think you are trapping yourself if you commit only to 'bringing back' 2000s & 2010s aesthetics. nostalgia cannot be stronger than creativity; there is so much more out there to work with if you commit to being vaguely timeless, or picking out your favorite & most inspiring shit from any moment in time, rather than just returning over and over to your childhood - or someone else's - over and over until it gets tiring. even if it never gets tiring, you're missing out. i think that (one of many of) the reason(s) capitalism sucks is because it keeps you thinking all linear-like. nah, i say fuck that. let me have my candlelit home and and my DIY-clothes and my CD player and my working fridge for my tradish (Greek) food and also leftover Persian takeout. this is also closer, relatively, to how people live when they're forced to rely on whatever they can get their hands on, because those people can't usually cling to one aesthetic like its a religion, and i think that if you're not one of those people, you should practice living like you are, because you never know when you'll suddenly become poor or homeless or, etc. etc. etc. anyway. this is all just opinions, my opinions, i hope you enjoy them, and i hope you make lots of art in your life

This is something I've sort of thought about before on the topics of "sad, beige moms." I am someone with a very strong esthetic vision for what I want my future home to look like. However, ever since that topic I've been thinking more about how much more "lived in" my house would feel if I just let it me a mosaic of me and my life (or if I live with others, them and their lives too)! And when I think about that, I feel happy.

i think your *life* should feel lived in, too, not just your house. i swear, some people must think they're only observing their life and not really living their life.

i do enjoy your opinions. ive always liked old technology, so the uptick in people seeking out retro tech for aesthetic or nostalgia reasons is something ive given a fair bit of thought to, ig. personally, for me, it is less of a matter of aesthetics and more like, genuine preference in user experience as youve discussed above (like i still stream music because its easier to discovering new songs, but i have an mp3 player and i buy used CDs and LPs, which ive also liked before they were trendy lololol hipster, cuz if i love an album, i want it forever). if not that, then its more of a cultural fascination. like, for example, retrocomputing: when personal computers hit the market, and middle/upper middle class people started buying em and having a family computer, what'd that do? what'd that change about the home? i like thinking about how that kinda technology changed people's habits, whether they are personal, professional, or social. like the fact there was a brief period of time where textbook publishers were including BASIC programs to type into your computer at home in math textbooks is SO interesting to me. i also think the development of various subcultures/scenes (big one is demoscene) in response to the newfound relative (big emphasis on relative) accessibility of the computer is interesting asf. same principles apply to the design and marketing of the computers. also the technology in of itself is fascinating to me, setting aside all aesthetic or cultural considerations. AND AND AND that was before PCs became evil data siphons that sent all your personal information to a megacorporation :3

so yeah i agree that using/being interested in using whatever youre organically drawn to is better than contriving an aesthetic
