2/4/25 - First Projects

Attempt no.1 at documenting my progress throughout the multiple graphic design courses I'm in this semester.

- Image Design -

Our first project is to design a magazine cover for the celebrity of our choosing. The very first person I thought of was Joji because he has been very near and dear to my heart since the 7th grade. Seeing his evolution from eating a cake made of hair and urine to a becoming a renown music artist with multiple hit albums is probably the best thing to illustrate for a magazine cover (surprised it hasn't been done yet I don't think). I took this borderline parasocial admiration and ran with it. The bottom screenshot is my current progress, it looks nearly complete but I still have lots of tweaking to do. I have one more class period to complete it and I think I'm on track.

- Typographic Design II -

The first assignment for this class is a handful specifically because there are very very few limitations and restrictions. My friend Rue and I were talking about this during class, and we realize that the more parameters there are on a project, the more streamlined and straightforward the process is. Therefore, you get the damn thing done faster. This is a thing I'm just now realizing as I battle this beast of a project. What it is is basically make 3 compositions based around a weather or traffic report of your choice. To keep myself from yapping too much, I'll end by saying it took me 2 weeks to figure out a concrete idea on how to approach this stupid article I chose about it snowing on the beaches in north florida. And FINALLY I'm making great progress. The images are def not done, and I don't even have a third composition yet. But PROGRESS is PROGRESS

- Graphic Design Method -

I feel like we've spent the past 3 classes doing tasks that could've been done in a more efficient way. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT is that we spent like 2 classes (each 3 hours btw) cutting out way too many magazine images only to use THREE. The prompt was to cut out images of objects (no people no illustrations no words) and find a full page for a background. Then with those images, make a visually pleasing composition. We're doing all this as a first project because my professor wants us to create and compose and image without computers and editing software. Editing the oldschool way. And that's it. Spending 3 hours to cut magazine images at 8am only to use 3 cutouts (yes our professor made it mandatory to cut 40-50 images) is a bit much. AND ON TOP OF THAT spending another entire class period just dedicated to brainstorming names. That was a process in and of itself, because he made each student go up to the whiteboard and write down a page-full of potential names for the collage piece we created. It gets very tedious when that task alone takes a person 5 minutes to write down all those words on a board while the class quietly watches. And then the class pitches more name ideas for another 3-5 minutes. AND it happens 10 more times with 14 more students. I'm just saying I think there could've been a better way that didn't have me falling asleep during the last couple students brainstorm sessions.

Currently, I need to be sketching for this class because we need to create a logo based off the collages we created and the titles we choose. The bottom is the collage I made with a black and white background, red tulip, and an apple for no reason other than it looked cool. Wish me luck, that's all for now.
