Anyone that knows much about my music taste knows that I absolutely love big bands. Orchestras, 7+ piece bands, complex compositions, and 10+ minute songs. I love it all. When it comes to orchestras that I follow the music of though one sticks out above the rest to me. Brain child of Sara McDonald, The NYchillharmonic.
Boasting a whopping 21 members, the NYchillharmonic is an amazing orchestra with modern music stylings that could be described as progressive jazz. 'This isn't your grandparents orchestra'. It's a little hard to explain how I came across their music. I think I just was clicking through some stuff on Spotify, typed something wrong into the search bar and clicked to satiate my curiosity. At the time I had been building a playlist for a Dungeons and Dragons character (A human artificer named Turba) and the song I happened across was just so perfect.
Surface tension starts off light and airy, the strings sounding almost hopeful. There is this esoteric feel to the lyrics. It's always made me think about the streams of sunshine as seen from just beneath the surface of the ocean. The middle dips and begins to warp into something different. I couldn't do this song justice with just words.
When I describe the music from 1, the only full length album currently by The NYchillharmonic, I typically describe it like a haunting siren's song. Sara McDonald's voice has this floaty and echoed quality that makes her sound as if she is trying to lure you into the sound itself. It's completely overwhelming at times. There are few vocalists in mainstream media with a similar voice. One of the only other vocalists I could liken her to is the female lead of 39 Questions or the female vocalist in Wild Child, both of which I would say are far from Mainstream.
My standout tracks off of 1 would be Blumen and Wax Garden, though I have a special place in my heart for each and every one of the songs. If you happen to come across this post and give The NYchillharmonic a listen please let me know what you think, I hope you enjoy it almost as much as I have.
