☆ Music Suggestion 02 - Hana Vu

Back in July of 2024 I went to my favourite concert yet. It was a very small venue with around or under 100 people there. It was this big wooden room in a suburban neighborhood. That concert was for one of my favourite artists of all time, Hana Vu.

Back in 2022 I found her music through a very small video that was posted on Tiktok, it probably only has... 8 thousand likes or so now? It was a video from a guy acting like a radio show host and introducing her music before playing my favourite song by Hana Vu.

Parking Lot

Frankly this song changed my life. There is something about it that conjures such specific imagery? I always see these dim street lights, warm summer nights, riding in  a shopping cart while your friend pushes you, sticking your hand out the window of a car on a long winding road on the side of a mountain, letting your hand ride the air as the world goes past. I have been obsessed with it since the day I found it frankly.

Hana Vu recently released a full length album though, which was what her most recent tour was promoting. The cover and promotional material for the album was themed after romanticism era paintings. It exudes style. Her songs have this distinctive sound as if they are playing at full blast through old headphones, buzzing from the sheer force of her voice itself. 

Some of my stand out tracks off of Romanticism would be Alone, which goes between these verses with such a nice consistent pattern in how she sings to these powerful buzzy belts during the chorus.

My second standout track would be 22, which has these melancholic feel to it. It's almost bittersweet and really felt like it reflects this feeling of getting older, slowing down and beginning to get sluggish. It makes me feel overcome with intense emotions of longing for youth, for better times, for simpler things. To shed adult responsibility even.
