Last night was horribleeee D:

Ok so before I start, I need to point out a few things:
I'm in band/Jazz band in my school, and they (the superintendent) always make Jazz play at the basketball games for halftime, which is already superrr awkward because it feels like we're uninvited to the games even though we have to

Also, a student who was previously on the team had passed, and it meant a lot to the community, so last night's game was to honor her and super sentimental

Finally, much of the Jazz band that was supposed to play music was gone, meaning that the normal band would have to play there, which is NOT reliable at all since half of them are in it because they have to be. so there were only 10 of us to start

When I got to the game before they started playing, everything was pretty normal, we played a stand tune here or there and played at half time for the first game. Which by then several
kids had left so we were down to 5

Only having 10 of us is already bad enough, since most the stand tunes we needed to play required different instruments, which we did not have enough of, so now being down to 5, it's pretty much just hope for the best and try not to suck

During the girls game halftime is when close family members to the girl who passed gave a speech, a prayer, and received her old jersey, which was VERY sentimental, so the family of the girl was crying, and everybody in the crowd was being respectful by being quiet and giving them time. But during this time, our band director got a text from the superintendent, saying that we need to play the school fight song to 'break the silence' (?). Ok bub sure... NOOOO!!! that would be horrific, like, "hey guys sorry about your deceased daughter now listen to us play terribly for you guys to hear"

We all stare at each other, and we look at our director like he's crazy, but he says "we have to do it my boss says so", there's nothing he can do about it otherwise he gets in trouble. We start counting off and playing, and it's just the most horrific thing ever, playing that was probably harder to do than walking 100 miles barefoot on red hot spikes while carrying a boulder. Like everyone was probably pissed off at us 'what are these band losers thinking? don't they have any respect?'
We didn't even play the whole song (thank god) but after we got finished we all couldn't believe it, it didn't feel real even

Afterwards we all felt awful, and the principal (who probably didn't know that we were forced to paly) had the gall to come up to us right after, give us two thumbs up and say "really nice playing guys"

I'm not sure If my director talked to the superintendent about the incident yet, but If I hear about it I will write more
