(Disclaimer: This is solely my opinion. I don't mean to upset any movie fans of the genres I'm gonna mention. Some movie titles I'm gonna mention may not be the ones you loved watching as well. So... yeah. :])
I have quite seen a lot of movies in my years of existence, and I think that over time, people have changed preference because these movie genres became repetitive and predictable by having the same storyline.
I just thought about this idea after watching Wicked (which was great btw) since the movies that I have watched before when I was younger no longer appeal to me anymore or don't seem to be making a buzz among movie enthusiasts or just straight up being forgotten.
So here are my top 5 movie genres that I think do not go along with today's audience taste anymore:
5. Disaster Movies: I love me a good disaster movie: The Day After Tomorrow, Dante's Peak, Geostorm, The Core, San Andreas, Don't Look Up, Deep Impact, Armageddon... but after watching 2012, I could say that that movie was the most 'disasterest' movie of all disaster movies. For me, it was the most extreme but realistic thing that could happen to our planet. It seemed like you can just integrate all the disaster movies in one movie and that's how you will get 2012. Today, a disaster movie can still be watchable, but it should be more realistic rather than extreme that people will just see it as a joke or something.
4. Biopics: So hear me out. Famous or infamous people in history can make good movies. But I think, most audiences just don't care about their life stories but instead focus on the controversies and conspiracies surrounding them and then see them on the news and know about how the source of the story alters the actual events in that person's life - Marilyn Monroe for example. Biopics are good for those who really know the person being portrayed or if they are shown in the country where the characters were born. In a global scale though, I think people just don't have so much care about them.
3. Parodies: I grew up watching classic horror movies, so when I found out about the Scary Movie franchise, it got me hooked right away because it was the most hilarious type of comedy for me since I knew the references from the horror movies I've watched. Then there was the Epic Movie, which also did the same thing but with blockbuster movies. The type of humor from these movies were unhinged and borderline offensive in today's standards but that's what made these movies so funny. Scary Movie 6 is on its way in June 2026 (as some online news outlets say) but honestly, I don't think it will be as hilarious as its predecessors because people now are just so sensitive with dark humor. I also feel like movies today are severely toned down with the use of vulgar language and explicit topics. People today can no longer tolerate a joke.
2. Romance: Romance movies were a gem during the early 2000s when the internet was just starting to dominate everyone and everything in the world. There is something about old school romance movies that separates them from the internet age love stories of today. The characters had more stories to tell, more chemistry and much relatable. I only see romance movies today if I search for them. They no longer make that much of an impact as before. Romance movies now just lack... romance. I just don't feel that zing anymore or as if love is in the air.
1. Comedy: I believe that this generation is the saddest people on Earth that they have become desensitized from having to laugh at jokes or something intended to be funny. People now view comedy movies as cringey. It may be because jokes are just being reused over and over again, and the dumb/crazy acting no longer works because it is misinterpreted as an insult by the dumber people. It's really hard to make people laugh especially now.
So I think that is it! I know a lot of factors play as to why these genres should or should not be on my top 5. So yeah... What do you think?
