Log 11: Projection onto Characters

You can tell a lot about someone from the fictional characters they like or create.

Especially if they tend to follow certain tropes, motifs, aesthetics etc.

There are a few possibilities as to why they like the character so much. (That I could infer, of course. This is a non exhaustive list):

  1. They relate to the character
  2. They want to be LIKE the character
  3. They are attracted to the character

I think this is self explanatory— You could see a reflection of their personality traits, aspirations, or tastes through the character.

Somehow, I feel like this is especially true with someone’s original characters since they MADE them. It’s like a little hint into their psyche.

Nihil est in intellectu quod non prius fuerit in sensu, after all. There is nothing in the mind that does not come from the senses.

It’s why the write what you know, know what you write tip exists. I mean, sure they can research about something they didn’t go through that they want to incorporate in their character’s story, but they will inevitably view it through a filter  (their biases and own experiences) and come up with their own interpretation of it.

Dunno, I’d say it’s impossible not to put a little of yourself in something you created.
