1. The wind
The wind whips so hard against my window
I can almost imagine that it’s raining
Rushing to get away from this dry desert heat
The gales rock the blinds through the crack I left open
Making the room cold enough
To pull out the heaviest blanket I own
It whistles its eerie song throughout
Upsetting cheap watercolors, tipping them over
To create a colorful, manageable mess
Throughout it all, I am cocooned in dark
With only the glow of a flashlight and a raven, repeating “Nevermore”
To keep my lonely body company
I dread the daylight, the morning
That tells me to get up
And spells the end of the wind
2. If I could touch you
If I could touch you
I would memorize the map
Your scars made
Over years of imagined traveling
I would feel your cheeks
Apple-round and not sallow
As they pretend to be
I would breach the gap your lips make
Dipping my finger in
Your tongue tasting me
I would card my fingers through your hair
Soft, inviting me to spend hours
Enveloped in your warmth
But I cannot
And must compensate with the betrayal
Of a flat, disinterested computer screen
3. Oh! My Heart
Oh! My heart
Why do you beat so
Despite the mind’s protestations, you’ve carried on
Oh! My heart
Why do you yearn so
Despite knowing you will never love, you remain a( )romantic
Oh! My heart
Why do you break so
Despite these years, you remain as fragile as the day you were first tangible
Oh! My heart
Why do you cry out so
Despite so much love and care, you wail your throat raw
Oh! My heart
Why did you stop so
Despite what you went on for, you left unfinished
