(srry if this sounds like a rant bc it kinda is)
To start this off, I want you to know just one thing about me. I. Hate. AI.
I'm in 8th grade, so my school is doing the typical stuff to get us "excited" for high school and college. Today they funneled all of the 8th graders into the cafeteria and made us sit on the extremely uncomfortable bench thingies lining the tables to listen to some dumb seminar none of us expected to remember by tomorrow.
But you know I wouldn't be writing a rant post if it had gone smoothly. The director of career paths and extracurriculars, Mr. M, started talking almost immediately about what we were going to do in college. His first point was, at its core, that we should value money over happiness and not follow our dreams. He said quote, "Think about it, if you want to be an actor or an artist in new york or LA, you have a very low chance of succeeding. If you become an engineer, on the other hand, you are almost guaranteed a well-paying and long-term job." He then started taking questions from the kids, like 'What if I want to be a football player?' and 'What if I want to be a construction worker?' and Mr. M kept saying that you wouldn't be able to do those long term even if they paid well, so you should go into tech or engineering for some major company.
Onto his next "point", it was that we should work in big business as soon as we can, giving examples such as apple, meta, and google. Which, you probably know, have little to no morals when it comes to actually caring about real human beings. He made a point about how all of the big businesses were staking out headquarters in Austin (the city I live in) and how tech giants and AI were the future, a couple of his examples being the the godawful AI coke ads and the self-driving taxis that are in my words, terrorizing the streets. Practically every kid i could see was visibly annoyed or angry, and I wasn't exactly an outlier.
One, the AI "art" bullshit. Companies like Coca-cola, Toys R Us, and Pedigree are using ai in order to make more profits and not have to pay a single soul for actual fucking art. I know of a bunch of people in big business art departments online that have been laid off because ones and zeros make the company more money. And don't even get me started on the scummy shit companies do to actually train the models, because I'd be typing into tomorrow.
Two, the self driving taxis. First off, these things cannot be trusted. Yes, I know these things are still very experimental, but they are dangerous as hell. Unlike human drivers, they don't see people, just other cars, traffic lights, and road signage, which means these things have no problem with running people down if they mistake something. Also, who would be responsible if you got hit by one? You? The company? The person being taxied? Because you cant exactly try an AI model for reckless driving, or worse, vehicular manslaughter. These things are already roaming the streets of my city, and I wouldn't be caught dead riding one of those things. Actually, if I were caught in one, I probably would be dead. This is just a little personal grievance, but those things are ugly as hell. I would honestly rather have every car on the streets be a deathtrap SUV rather than a self driving car.
Then we were FINALLY let go with absolutely zero will to tolerate school anymore.
This is why I'm moving schools next year.

I absolutely LOATHE AI. There's this issue going around my country about a guy who won an art competition using A.I.
I actually blame both the 'artist' and the judges. For playing unfair to the other artists who put their talents only to lose to A.I.

This is so true, im currently in ninth grade and i despise just as much AI! People know less and less how to use basic technology in a right and profitable way, so giving away a self functionning bot can't do good. Not only it takes away jobs and works that have a deep meaning but it also takes away the ability to think. More than half of my classmates use chat gpt for their homework (counts for a grade) and since the teachers heard of it, the graded homework has less value. For people who actually bust their ass for days to do it, its very annoying.

AI art is so ass. So lifeless and soulless. No program will ever be able to make a piece of artwork that has substance and meaning. The fact that if given the choice, humans naturally seem to gravitate towards the fun, outdoorsy, artistic careers shouts volumes about how ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ art already is. I want AI to do my laundry and sort my cutlery so I have more time to create. Not the other way around.

also, everyone in my class uses freenotes on their iPads (also a thing i do not use) which has a chatgpt functionality baked in it and they keep using it for easy ass things, i swear the oly human i have bloodlust for is elon musk

i totally get u man. i'm a junior in high school with some college level classes (international baccalaureate so if you cheat you get kicked out of the program) and every day i see kids using ai to take notes for them??? all we have to do most of the time in my history class is watch a crash course video or something similar and take notes on a google doc. insanely easy stuff that only requires your attention and decent typing skills, and these kids are telling a program to do it for them. not to mention the environmental impacts of ai (one chatgpt inquiry takes up 5x the amount of electricity in data centers as a normal google search [from mit.edu]). i'm really hoping genAI is just a fad by techbros and nothing seriously incorporated into society, even though it's looking that way.

As an adult and elder gen z, Mr. M speaks some unfortunate truths. AI is going to fully be incorporated in our lives for the rest of eternity unless there is a massive event that destroys the earth or internet. I think AI can be a fantastic tool to aid creativity, but unfortunately it seems that it will one day become the replacement. It sucks growing up being told to follow your dreams and be who you want to be only to realize as an adult that the best path to follow is money and job security. Find the career you hate the least, save up money, and find joy in hobbies and friendships.

I'm doing my Abitur rn (German Final Exam) and we had something similar! But it was completely the opposite.. The whole 12th Grade was crammed in a room and had a seminar for 40 minutes about how using AI for your final exam is plagiarism. If it isn't specified can lead to 0 points or even to legal problems (money fine/not finishing school). I find it really weird and almost revolting that "visual creations"/"art" by AI is not being treated the same as it is in written form. It IS plagiarism. There should be laws against it or at least it should be labeled as such!! :/

some schools (atleast here where i live idk) dont even have a proper space for books and the staff regularly insists in putting and paying a coach to teach kids to just scrap away their wantings and needs to just obey the capital.. its so messed up
