The Cup: Layer 1 i believe the cup has several levels it can be broken down from, the main and most obvious one being addiction, lines like “i can’t put down the cup, i can’t put down the cup” not only make up the emotional core of the song but also tell its tale of addiction
The Cup: Layer 2 like Layer 1, Layer 2 is also about addiction, but more specifically the rampant alcoholism within the African American community, the addiction to the devil’s water that rots so many livers and tears apart so many families
The Cup: Layer 3 i believe Layer 3 is the key emotional centre of the song, Layer :3 is about how pervasive toxic masculinity is within not just the African American community but also all communities, the performative masculinity that often leads to addiction (the song in my mind recalls similar vibes to the far inferior Swimming pools by Kendrick lamid). the line that solidifies this Layer for me is “i love all my N words but i promise i’m not a faggot, ayy” akin to a “no homo” this cementing of strict hierarchical views and beliefs on masculinity within those most vulnerable to the threat of addiction, this idea of anything other than hyper masculinity being associated with homosexuality and therefore lesser (as homophobia runs just as deep within those communities) being key to the song, it’s masterful in its portrayal of those within such a situation but the singer not being within the situation but commenting on it (like when Dead Kennedys talks about reporting fags, they are not actually telling us to report the gay people but instead commenting on those likely to report the queers)
in conclusion, the some The Cup by David Blunt is quite possibly the greatest song of all time, rivalled only Facts or Grippy as it serves both as a feminist masterpiece but also gripping social commentary on other pressing social issues
i got this off my reddit account i did not steal it.
