2020 alternative is a very visually interesting blend of emo, grunge, and mall goth. today we're gonna explore some history, the visual markers, the general aesthetic, and of course music!!
the 2020 alt aesthetic originated in 2020 once lockdown kicked in. Everyone was stuck at home, so internet culture became a huge part of young people's lives. Over on TikTok, it was pretty much the Wild West of fashion, and a lot of old styles were revived and revamped. For example, the "2018 art hoe" aesthetic was repackaged as the "preppy uwu" aesthetic (I'll get into this on a later post).
The main visual markers include short, plaid skirts, lots of belts with chains, bunny hats, face masks with cute patterns, chokers, garters, thigh high socks, leg warmers, and TALL platform boots. Skulls, skeletons, and the ":3" are some common prints you could find on anything. Hot Topic was over taken by this style, which is a controversial topic for another day lol.
being chronically online is QUINTESSENTIAL to the style. staying up to date on the all the latest creator drama, fandoms, etc is what made the style so memorable - a huge chunk of the alt community was and is lowk toxic (lol). Anime tee's/refs also made a lot of appearances in fashion during this time.
Some 2020 alt songs:
Baby My Phone - Yameii Online
Brooklyn Blood Pop - SyKo
8 now - food house
hot milk - snails house
FVN - Lvl 1
Here's a playlist!
And here is a Pinterest board!
I really couldn't get to everything in this blog, the chronically online aspect of the 2020 alt craze was the best part tbh. See ya'll in the next one!
