I know that this is kind of an old topic but it came up when me and my friend were talking about ex-mutual friend that was a gooner and into booktok. I hate booktok so much because first of all, it's literally just porn. The "bookworms" are just porn addicts and it's so annoying that they can't appreciate actually literature without it having 50000 sex scenes. Plus, a lot of the time it's just romanticized r@pe or non-consent and that's a major problem since it means that people won't take ACTUAL sa victims seriously anymore. And it's way too popular. Like, I walked into a Books-A-Million the other day and half the damn store was smut. Unwrapped, on low shelves where children can access it and read what's in it. Even worse because some of the book covers look like CHILDRENS BOOKS or books for teens/young adults. And then some people read these 'books' in public. LIKE, PLEASE DONT BE GETTING HORNY IN MY VINCINITY. I DIDNT CONSENT. I genuinely don't care what people read in the privacy of their own homes, but if you CANNOT read anything without "spice", you're a porn addict. Booktok's popularity also means that authors with genuinely good writing and originality that actually have something worth reading can't attract an audience because porn is taking up all the shelves in book stores; and in consequence, they can't fund their writing. Idk tho.

I honestly believe that a lot of those writers should be on AO3 or Wattpad or Tumblr, those are really the "smut" bad writing places where it's a lot more acceptable(?)
All I'm really sad about is the decline in quality. I don't mind smut all that much if it's well written but all these people just write for the sake of money and editors and publishers just want to get as many books out as possible.
It's just hard to find really good books nowadays :/
THIS! This is exactly what I was getting at, you totally worded it so much smoother than me tho lol. I don't care if people read smut in moderation, in privacy, and as long as it's in the 'right and acceptable' place. As someone who used to frequent Ao3, I really think there are ways to write it well although it's personally not my cup of tea. My main point is that that booktok has began pumping out slop just for the sake of erotica and it's drowning out other up and coming authors that actually write well and deserve to be funded by purchases from readers.

Freaking THANK YOU! I generally get to avoid booktok (barely use tiktok at all lol), but it's now unfortunately seeping into my Instagram reels. Like, I could have definitely gone through life without hearing about Colleen Hoover.

I personally donβt see the problem with reading books like that in public. The person reading that likely isnβt interacting with others in that moment and unless there are pictures in the book, you wonβt be able to know whatβs going on unless you actually take the time to read the cover, spine, or look into the pages. If itβs someone minding their own business, I donβt get whatβs wrong about that. Now you can still judge them for having a porn addiction or whatever you like, but at least they are by themselves. That is their own problem

i agree massively, its funny when this criticism is made and they assume we're just tryna be better than them though. a lot of these books will actually influence others etc, books are political and u cant separate the artist from the art here cause every book u read contains the authors views and beliefs etc in them. its not normal to read grape fantasies, and if they do it to cope with their trauma, its just feeding into their own problems. id suggest actual therapy and proper methods of dealing with trauma to those who try to justify supporting grape in books and romanticising it! and im fed up of seeing the same books on repeat on booktok, and theyre not even good. and theres amazing accounts but they just wont get views or engagement because theyre not posting about those main popular books and it sucks. people should aim to read diversely and read what they enjoy but not at the extent of others, if youre reading all these abuse and grape fantasies and just passing it off as dark romance then yeah, you are the problem and i will think im better than u lmao. a someone who has gone through a lot of trauma multiple times in my life, its not okay to be reading these books and supporting these authors. and thats an entirely other point, cause why are we still supporting authors who have done messed up things or been racist or theyre using their profits to silence a grape victim *cough coho cough*. and why are these books the ones that are the most popular?? they suck, and u do too if ur supporting these authors.

I totally agree and then they say that people reading actual literature are boring?? like excuse you are an addict to these weird smutty books. My classmates love all these weird books and they love zade meadows, that is so weird like why do you like him? because he didn't ask for contest? they read all sorts of weird smutty books in the name of "romance" and then say its cute. the worst part of this is how most people on booktok are teens. My niece literally has multiple "spicy" books and shes a preteen. Its actually disgusting how this is basically p2rn for girls
not to mention older women on booktok are enabling and encouraging them to buy these type of books while downplaying the content. they dont want to admit they have a porn addiction
