Certainly an odd album which doesn't even begin to explain it. In all honestly what is there to explain about this album other than it exists. What I mean by this is that this album is in such a gray place; at times there is nothing conventionally appealing about any of the songs in the album, but it's so important because of what it stands for.
The album honestly stands for nothing and everything all at the same time. Hype Williams was starting to get big around this time, and they gave a free album to The Guardian and were very confusing to them in an artistic way. The article about them talks about them making things up about their lives to the point where it was kind of expressed as "what's real and what's not, does it really matter?", and I feel like this album evokes that spirit.
This album has no specific track list and no art upon its release. These songs exist as outtakes and are organized alphabetically, but it still feels glued together. I wanted to shuffle this album but it didn't feel right, everything had to be played as is. At the same time it doesn't have to be that way either though. Some songs will land and some songs won't and that's okay too. The main premise of this album doesn't exist I feel like. There's might not be a concept, but at the same time it feels like there's supposed to be one. It feels like the songs have no meaning but have a specific energy put into it that makes it feel important.
I know this review doesn't explain the music very well, but to me this whole album is an art project and less about the music. Still it shouldn't be passed aside so here's what I think:
Like in classic Hype Williams fashion a lot of the music the music has this lazy, lo-fi, hazy production, and often ranges from ambient to this lazy & stripped back pop music. Even some of the skits are different from what you would hear on a regular album. The album can range from music you'd hear in abandoned budlings, dreams, and labeled as lost. It feels like there is no beginning and there is no end; not even a loop or a place to observe and comment on. The project feels like an unrecognizable object in your hand, with no hit or clue of what it is no matter what direction you turn it in, twist it, stretch it, or anything. If this album had a home it'd lost on the internet in an infinite space of nothing and something.
