(Quickfire) GK:MOVIE — Fan Girl (2023), Forevermore (2002)

Fan Girl (2023)

Written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone

Avid Paulo Avelino fan Jane meets her onscreen idol in less-than-ideal circumstances after stowing away in the back of his pickup truck, and the young stan finds out that he isn't quite the perfect man when nobody's watching.

GK? Not so bad, but not my favorite.

The concept is interesting, although I think it's a little on the edgy side. I have no qualms about this film; I can easily see it being someone's favorite, or at the very least, being able to elicit some sort of reaction, as it's a rather controversial story. For that reason alone though, I can't say it's my cup of tea. I can't even say it's a type of entertainment I enjoy. Would I recommend it? Honestly, I think there's a certain type of person out there that would enjoy this, though I don't think I'd need to recommend this to them because they must have already seen it for sure. To the rest, I don't think I'd recommend it.

Forevermore (2002)

Directed by John D. Lazatin

A promising young engineer returns to his hometown when his grandfather suffers a heart attack. The grandfather's assistant is delighted to see the young man as she has been in love with him since childhood.

A classic.

GK? An endearing yes.

It's entertaining. I get that this is the exact kind of movie that "cinephiles" like to dogpile on and criticize for being "not deep" and corny, because it's "yet another love story", but I'm at a point in my movie-watching journey where I find old Pinoy movies, specifically early 2000s rom-coms rife with love-teams and song titles as the movie title, surprisingly entertaining and even enjoyable. This one is a little on the cheesier side, and it's still not my most favorite, and I probably wouldn't recommend it, but I still had a few good laughs and tooth-rotting cheesy moments that it's borderline amusing.
