Himekaji Gyaru - History and Fashion!
Himekaji gyrau is a super cutesy style that originated in Japan in the early 2000's! today we're gonna explore all the history, visual markers, general aesthetic, and of course some music!!
The key to himekaji is LAYERS!! Main visual markers include pink, white, and black. Lots of frills, ruffles, and lace on everything. Big bows, and even bigger curly hair/wigs. Some common patterns/motifs include My Melody/Sanrio characters, hearts, roses, and pearls! Heels and fake nails are also a huge part of himekaji.
The term" Gyaru" is a label one uses to indicate they are dressing against beauty norms. In general, a Gyaru wears overdramatic makeup, uses makeup to create an over tanned look, wears skimpy clothing, has long nails, and talks in slang! Men can also be Gyaru! They're called "Gyar(u)os".
Himekaji makeup is on the softer side; long, fake eyelashes, agyeosal + large contacts, bright pink blush, and bright pink lipstick. To accessorize, consider headbands with bows, roses, and/or pearls on them. When it's cold out, consider winter boots with fur and a wedge!
