Caribbean reef shark — a species of requiem shark

(Carcharhinus perezi) Conservation Status – Near Threatened, population decreasing

Up to 3 metres long or 9.8 feet long

Found in the tropical waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Brazil and is the most common reef shark to be encountered in the Caribbean Sea

This species is difficult to tell apart from other large members of its family such as;

The dusky shark and the silky shark because of their robust, streamlined bodies

Distinguishing characteristics include dusky-coloured fins without prominent markings, a short free rear tip on the second dorsal fin, and tooth shape and the number of teeth

Their diet consists of reef fish, along with cephalophods (e.g. squid) and crustaceans (e.g. crabs) larger sharks of this species will also eat other elasmobranchs, including the yellow stingray and eagle rays

The Caribbean reef shark infrequently attacks humans, there have been numerous documented attacks on humans by Caribbean reef sharks but there are no known fatalities

In general, a shark attack on a human is behaviorally similar to an attack upon natural prey. A human is more susceptible to being attacked if the shark is cornered and feels that there is no escape route. In situations like these, the shark may rake the victim during the attack resulting in lacerations. Although these characteristics have not been recorded in specific association with the shark, based on observations of gray reef sharks it is possible Caribbean reef sharks may display similar behavior
