Enjoying: Emilia Perez

Went to see Emilia Perez movie last night.

Synopsis: A Mexican lawyer is offered an unusual job to help a notorious cartel boss retire and transition into living as a woman, fulfilling a long-held desire.

I very much mostly enjoyed it. The acting was great, cinematography was good, the story was interesting and compelling and well written.

The 'musical' part of it didn't hit the mark. I've been wondering why. I felt it should have been perhaps a little more camp to make it work but that wasn't it either. Then I read it's based on an opera/operetto and it makes much more sense now. Silly thing is marketed as a musical but that is not the right word for the expectation.

I can totally see this as an opera, especially on stage and it would be better still. The movie adaptation of the opera hit almost every mark except the musical bit. Very enjoyable.

It was interesting, it was fun, go watch it.
