this relates back to what my previous post was kinda about (sorry I'm really passionate abt UI and aesthetics at the moment lol)
I think we're at a stage where companies are slowly but surely compensating for people's disdain for bland minimalism eg. Corporate Memphis
things like Wins 11 (which i'm not gonna use until I have to and even then Linux is looking kinda sexy rn) changing the Icons to have slightly more depth and gradient to them (which is just a REAL fucking baby step, the weird mac ripoff UI still sucks, felt cheap like I was using a phone and was trying too hard to be sleek but in doing so actually stripped itself of some of it's more useful layout elements also something something bloatware) and mountain dew going back to it's old logo are (what I hope) are signs of minimalism fatigue slowly influencing graphic design.
The visual language of a decade / period in time can also be seen in the biggest consoles of it's given era, ie. with the 7th gen the "aero" and "skeuomorphic" styles dominated things like the Xbox 360, Windows 7, The Ps3, the Wii and the Wii U.
With the Y2k era Xbox had it's edgy alien-esque design language and UI, the ps2 had a retro futuristic sleekness to it's design and the game-cube being the personification of early 2000s softer, more inviting design elements, appealing more so to younger audiences.
The 8th gen marked the beginning of this "corporate Memphis" design language with the release of things like Windows 8.1 (UGLY!!!) The boxy brutalist shape of the Ps4, the sleek almost apple inspired design of the Xbox One and later Nintendo's Switch that boasted unique and admittedly innovative utility qualities but a console that like all the other 8th gens fell victim to perhaps the worst most bland and janky UI of them all.
With the Wii and Wii U(which I have a soft spot for because Splatoon was my childhood) to the Switch, it's baffling to see the way Nintendo's design language fell from grace, especially since Nintendo makes consoles with the majority demographic being aimed at kids. I know little me would rather his console run a little worse and make me feel more immersed by it's UI that have it be optimized for game storage but look like the equivalent of unseasoned chicken.
The relationship between a young lad and his console of choice is sacred and shouldn't be half assed the way the switch was. I was lucky enough to to be just the right age when the Switch dropped to play Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey and more which I loved but I type this as more of a Wii U, 3Ds, Ps3 Kid myself. I just didn't have the switch in my formative years but for anyone who did I imagine it couldn't have been fun not having a UI that acc stimulated your brain in the same way the Wii U did by showing you everyone's Miis and made you feel like you were part of a community like with Miiverse and shit.
But these UI leaks and rumors for the new Switch 2 are big if true, we could be seeing the return of another community driven social media style platform like Miiverse (extremely loose rumor tho) With speculations of custom backgrounds, a more Wii U inspired game layout and generally more customization options I think it's refreshing to see Nintendo go with the flow of the pendulum and make a UI more catered to the experience of the user (if these are true rumors which I think they could be as some leaks I've seen in the past are pretty accurate if not bar for bar design) and it'd be cool to see a sort of return to form for them.
If these rumors turn out out be true as we learn more about the console I'd seriously scraping together some dough for it, I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I know there's people out there who may pass this off as just another modern soulless Nintendo project just because it isn't their childhood design they're used to but wanting things to return to a less minimal approach can't be achieved via nostalgic yearning, good designs can be brought back by investing in what you respect as a user. examples like Disney putting out another shitty live action remake sequel for the lion king (Mufasa) at the same time as Sonic 3 and having their sales pail in comparison to Sonic's show that the power still lies within the hands of people putting their money where their mouth is and choosing the option they think is actually taking us forward as a culture. (Now Disney wants to buy SEGA apparently?)
The same principal applies to social media, people sick of the dehumanizing, brain-rotting effects of the core web are migrating to places like here (SpaceHey) Neocities and Discord servers. Tik-Toks ban might also draw people to the peripheral web.
Moral of the story is companies can't keep up their bs forever, people will find alternatives, invest in what they want and Companies are just gonna have to accept it. If the Switch 2 fulfills it's rumors I might buy it.
Let me know ur thoughts on the subject or if u think I'm wrong and stupid or if u agree, I wanna hear it all :))
