I'll be sharing some important steps I've been following that I've noticed that have had a great impact on my hair. Remember that what works for me might not work for others, since there are lots of hair types that have different necessities.
This is especially directed to people with long straight hair or people who want to grow out their hair.
Things that have changed my hair game
1. Oils!!
As a person with a tendency of having greasy scalp, purposefully applying oil to my hair seemed pointless, but it has completely transformed my hair. I use two types:
- Rosemary scalp oil: I apply it directly on my scalp, and massage it with my fingers for about 5 to 8 minutes before I shower. This helps break down all the dirt and build up, and also hydrates the skin and strengthens the roots. I do this about 3 times a week.
- Argan oil for mids and ends: hydrates hair, and makes it smoother and shinier. Also prevents frizz and split ends. I do this one or two times a day.
2. Using shampoo and conditioner properly + massages
I use shampoo and conditioner every time I wash my hair. Here's how I use them:
- Shampoo: only apply to your roots (that's where the actual dirt and build up is) and massage your scalp. Don't be afraid to double-cleanse your scalp/hair if you used scalp oil before hopping into the shower. Massaging the scalp is great for blood circulation, which can actually make your hair grow slightly faster.
- Conditioner: use a good amount, but rinse your hair beforehand so the product can properly penetrate your hair and do its thing. After applying conditioner, I put my hair up in a hair clip so it doesn't touch my back, which can cause back acne. Leave the conditioner on for at least 5 minutes.
3. Trimming the ends
Split ends are not it. You can prevent them, but once the ends of your hair start becoming fragile and break, the only thing you can do for the best is trimming them. You cannot repair them.
Now, some things that I would avoid doing often for healthy hair. I still do these sometimes, it's not like you're not allowed but ykwim.
- Bad eating habits
- Hair dye, bleach, relaxers...
- Not washing it enough
- Using heating tools often
