Album review #1

BRAT. by Charlie XCX

Good evening. I saw this website had a blog function and didn't know what to use it for, but then I thought of a fun idea.
I'll be reviewing albums here until I get bored of it!
So, without further ado...

Album review:

I didn't expect much going into the album itself.
Seeing the hype around the album I thought it would be just another popish mess of catchy choruses and whisper singing. Boy was I wrong...
BRAT. throws you right into the music, it gets to it's point very quickly, and from the very first track you know what kind of ride you're in for. The sounds I can only explain to be a new subgenre of pop, if not a new genre entirely. When you listen to BRAT., you're listening to a mix of Charlie's signature pop girl voice, mixed with beats and melodies I can only describe as club electronica. It sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does and what this album does, it does well.
That being said, the album should be taken for what it is, and that's an experimental pop album from a genre in its infancy. The critique I'd like to point out is that the Album is carried by a few really good tracks. Tracks like "360", "365" and "Von Dutch" to name a few really carry the album with their heavier focus on the electronic side of the album. These few tracks bring themselves to the forefront with original beats which flow very well and are really feel good and jumpy in nature. To contrast this, I think some tracks like "Sympathy is a knife", "I might say something stupid" and "Talk talk" fall really flat. These are slower tracks with less emphasis on the beats and the feeling of nuance is really lost with them. That said, I can forgive a lot of the tracks falling flat due to the albums experimental nature. This is Charlie's first project since 2022 and, even though I haven't listened to any of her previous projects barring the obvious radio hits, it really shows that it took time and effort to create this work. Music is art after all, art takes time and this album shows it very well.
Apart from the album itself, I've also listened to some of the additions in the new BRAT. re-releases. I can really see improvement and a sharpening of vision. Keep in mind, this is probably the first pop album I've listened to from start to finish so it says a lot. I'm not usually a fan of this type of music, but Charlie really innovated here. This is all to say that I am excited for what the future holds. Something like this has been a long time coming for a genre filled with bland industry plants. I give this album a solid 7.5/10.

Best/Weakest:

I think the best song on the album is 365 with a solid 8/10.
This song really showcases what Charlie offers with this album and it does it well. I was torn between this one and Von Dutch, but decided for 365 because I liked the flow and vibe better. The beats on 365 are very catchy and the dual meaning of the song is just very funny to me lol. Overall, one of the best pop numbers I've heard in a while.

I think the weakest song on this album is I might say something stupid with 2/10.
Beyond any shadow of a doubt this is the worst number on this album. The autotune on Charlie just doesn't work and it covers a lot of her naturally beautiful singing voice. I can't even see where she was going with this song. It genuinely hurts to listen to. This song is one of the reasons I don't trust Anthony Fantano, because, if he can give an album with a song like this on it a 10/10 then we have nothing to talk about. Horrible track, if you're listening to the album for the first time I advise you to skip it!!!

Closing remarks

I hope you liked my first album review! Keep in mind this is my personal opinion and if you disagree that's fine. Next time I'll be doing something nowhere near similar to this! So if you're a fan of Numetal stay tuned ;)

Bye Bye!!
