Hey guys! Its been a hot minute since I've done a recommendation and I figured Id start doing some of these again for the fun of it, particularly stories that have caught my interest lately. Boy do I have some new ones for yall. Okay so....The story in question that I've been fixated on lately is a manhwa called "Plaything"...and Ill let this volume cover speak for itself:
Yoon Karma on the cover
Story:
Plaything's storyline begins with the death of a young girl named Hyena who is the daughter of a man named Lee Myung-jun, the Vice Chairman of the Hyun-Do group. Basically she was born with a higher status than most and she is from a "chaebol" (business family). Despite her wealth, she was a very kindhearted girl who only wanted to live her life and get along with others, contradicting the typical richkid stereotype.
At some point, a group of bullies band together and start tormenting Hyena. What all of the bullies have in common is they are from families of status as well. This chain of events and cycle of abuse inevitably lead to the poor girl's death, which kickstarts the events of the story when the chairman publicly "forgives" the bullies...
SIKE
While publically forgiving them, he is already in the stages of formulating a revenge plan. This culiminates in him taking in a mysterious North Korean girl named "Yoon Karma" who is said to be the results of experiments by the government. Karma is sent to the school that Hyena used to attend by VC Lee, and from there Karma takes out her sadistic tendencies on the deceased Hyena's tormentors.
Characters
Hyun-do Group
Yoon Karma
A North Korean girl who was adopted by Vice Chairman Lee to be used to enact his revenge due to her superhuman characteristics. She has superhuman strength and reflexes, is apathetic to pain, and showcases sadistic tendencies. Her sadism isn't the result of her being a natural psychopath, but rather the cruel experiments she experienced in her upbringing that scrambled her brain. While being instructed during the revenge, Karma typically likes to do things her own way and do revenge with her own unique spin. She can show endearing and funny traits from time to time, like how she loves chocolate smoothies.
Thanks to her status as a North Korean defector and refugee, the school covers up her actions...and also thanks to her connections to the Hyun-do group. Karma typically likes to punish the perpetrators by giving them a taste of their own medicine bit by bit. When carrying out her "punishments", Karma's eyes will turn from light blue to a crimson red color.
Vice Chairman Lee
A man who is the Vice Chairman of a prolific group in South Korea. Before his daughter's death, he was a bleeding heart of kindness who was one of the nicest people you could meet. After the death of his daughter, his personality changed into one that is more anger fueled and vengeful. A jaded and broken man who will stop at nothing to punish his daughter's killers, mainly utilizing Yoon Karma as his instrument of revenge.
Lee Hyena
The deceased daughter of Vice Chairman Lee. She was a normally happy girl who was unfortunately roped into a cruel circle of bullying.
Antagonists
Eunjin Song (Perpetrator A)
A bratty girl often compared to a Chihuahua due to her temperament and attitude. She is one of the tormentors of Hyena. She is shown to have tormented Hyena by making her walk around with a dog collar on.
Yejin Moon (Perpetrator B)
The class president of Yoon Karma's class. Displays skills in Taekwondo and comes from a strict uptight family with a stern Christian father. Is shown to be one of the more prominent tormentors of Hyena, particularly force feeding her cigarettes.
Jinwoo Song (Perpetrator C)
The brother of Eunjin Lee. He tormented Hyena via SH, and thus got a punishment befitting his crimes.
Cha Seohyun (Leader of the bullies)
A girl with immense power and status thanks to her connections to a father who is a possible presidental hopeful. She is typically depicted with spade earrings and thick long hair.
...Ahem, now as for why I like this story? Well, its insane, fun, the revenge is pure catharsis, and its really entertaining to see some monsters get knocked down a peg! I also love Yoon Karma's character and when she briefly shows very "human" characteristics. This recommendation mostly covers Season 1 that isn't finished being translated yet. Season 2 is currently in development. Hope yall liked this new recommendation!
