Is it possible for world peace to exist?/¿Puede existir un mundo en paz?

Is it possible for world peace to exist? Without thinking it twice, my first answer is no. But before going through the matter, I want to make another question: What is peace? 

A DIEC2's(*) definition is "public calmness", but I don't think that's completely right. There are plenty of ways of achieving a feeling of superficial calm, such as disinformation and propaganda, and they often do not go hand in hand with peace. Peace is more than the absence of violence; it is a state of collective and honest tranquility.

But ignoring those details, it is evident that the first step towards world peace is to put an end to all the wars around the globe. That single-handedly looks impossible. It has been a long time since wars stopped being about territory, race, religion, or such motives. Now war is a business, and our system will not be able to easily divide itself from such industry. To those modern conspiracies can be added the selfishness and hunger for power that have characterized our species all through history.

So as long as there are people who believe that wealth and power are more valuable than human lives, I am certain there will never be world peace. 

And what role do we common citizens play inside such catastrophism? Most of us choose not to get involved, as the truth is that there is little we can do to achieve that utopia. As a society, we could impulse change via protest, but we have become too conformist to consider that as a realistic option. As individuals, we could contribute to general well-being by making altruistic actions once in a while or making kindness the default attitude towards people.

What is evident is that there is nothing we can individually do to make front to those governments and companies that make a benefit out of war. At the same time, a severe conformism epidemic prevents society from acting as a whole towards change.

¿Puede existir un mundo en paz? Sin pensarlo dos veces, mi respuesta inicial es no. Pero antes de abordar la pregunta en sí, quiero plantear otra cuestión: ¿Qué es, la paz?

Una definición según el DIEC2(*) es "tranquilidad pública", pero yo no creo que eso sea del todo correcto. Hay muchas formas de crear una sensación de tranquilidad superficial, como la desinformación o la propaganda, y no siempre van de la mano de la paz. La paz es más que la ausencia de violencia: es un estado de tranquilidad colectiva y calma profunda y honesta.

Pero ignorando estos detalles, claro está que el primer paso hacia la paz mundial es acabar con las guerras alrededor del mundo. Eso por sí solo ya parece imposible. Hace ya tiempo que los motivos de la guerra transcienden a meras cuestiones territoriales, raciales o ideológicas. Hoy la guerra es un negocio, una industria de la que nuestro sistema no se podrá substraer tan fácilmente. A estas conspiraciones modernas, se le pueden añadir el egoísmo y el hambre de poder que nos han caracterizado como especie a lo largo de la historia.

Entonces, mientras haya quien considere la riqueza y el poder más valiosos que la vida humana, puedo afirmar que nunca habrá un mundo en paz.

Y dentro de tal catastrofismo, ¿qué papel jugamos la población comuna? La mayoría de nosotros optamos por no involucrarnos, ya que lo cierto es que hay poco que podamos hacer para lograr esta utopía. Como sociedad podríamos favorecer el cambio mediante la protesta, pero nos hemos vuelto demasiado conformistas como para considerarlo una opción realista. Como individuos, podemos contribuir al bienestar común con pequeñas acciones altruistas alguna que otra vez, o adoptando la amabilidad como actitud predefinida.

Lo que está claro, es que individualmente no podemos hacer frente a los gobiernos y empresas beneficiados de la guerra. Asimismo, una epidemia de conformismo sacude la sociedad y la indispone de actuar colectivamente en favor del cambio.
