Half Life: Alyx - Review

Half-Life: Alyx feels like the Half-Life 1 of VR. This doesn’t mean it’s a bad game its the opposite really. The gameplay, puzzles, combat, and graphics are all absolutely amazing. The motion capture, is on another level, characters feel incredibly lifelike, with expressions and movements that make them seem like real.

The attention to details throughout the game does an incredible job of immersing you into the universe. Im not even joking i often found myself just playing with things in the level, completly forgetting about my objective. The story is engaging it has the Half-Life sense of mystery. But as you reach the credits, you’re left with feeling of wanting more.

Half-Life 1 was a revolutionary title when it released, but it was Half-Life 2 that really took things to the next level. HL2 refined the mechanics, introduced new gameplay systems, and constantly evolved the experience. Each new tool, weapon, and puzzle mechanic was built upon and changed, evolving throughout the game. It wasn’t just about the story—it was about giving players new ways to interact with the world and the mechanics.

Unfortunately, Half-Life: Alyx doesn’t quite have that same level of evolution. While the gameplay is fantastic, it doesn’t radically build on its core mechanics in the same way that HL2 did. It's just is great and thats it. The movement and interaction mechanics are polished and work beautifully in VR. But finishing the game leaves you wanting not something great but something amazing.

It's revolution and beginning at the same time.
