Originates from either Ancient China, Egypt or Mesopotamia. 

Ancient Egyptians used it to symbolise the flooding of the Nile. 

Norse legend depicts it as the great serpent Jörmungandr who encircles the earth and bites its own tail.

Hindu cosmology says it helps to prop up the earth. 

Alchemical books use it to represent eternity. 

Chinese culture, it comes from the yin yang symbol.
