book review of Lucas by MJ James

Hello everyone and anyone who is reading this! Today I finished reading 'Lucas' by MJ James and found the book isn't up to my taste, and that's okay.

First, let's start with the basics before I dwell in deeper with the book. There will be spoilers in my review (obviously) and I just want to say thank you and I am grateful that I won this book in a giveaway hosted by Storygraph.

I personally feel like the book is more character driven with a complicated character development in my opinion. In the beginning, we're introduced to our main lead, Lucas, who recently transitioned after divorcing his now ex husband. We explored and got to know him as a character, scraping money to get top surgery.

But when he transformed into a vampire, the priority of the story shifted into him exploring his new vampire side then wanting to find information about his late parents' death. Great! Some coming of age concept but somehow we left that plot mid way and wasn't mentioned again as the story progress! okay.. that irked me a little but whatever!

As we continued into the story, it made me feel like this is just some form of pity party for Lucas, always wallowing about his new vampire abilities, the situation he was in and how everyone was pissed off at his existence.. like ok! And the only person who isn't against him is just some vampire guy WHO HE JUST MET by the way, who is coincidentally the only vampire to not dislike him. okay!

I feel like the whole 'turning into a vampire' thing is a analogy of getting raped.. I can't explain fully how but if you want to know deeper about that is by simply reading the book and maybe you'll have a better experience reading with it.

Another thing about the book is that there were so many things going on and being introduced that wasn't explored fully and deeply because Lucas does not care about and by the end we were left hanging and know so little about vampires EVEN THOUGH the book is centered around vampirism.. okay!

tl;dr, pacing was just off and a lot and a little happened.

Well, honestly that's all I have to say, to conclude this 'review', this is just my personal opinion and if you yourself enjoyed reading this, good for you! but this book is simply not my cup of taste.
