I seriously don't understand people who don't enjoy music the way I do.
Recently, I had a conversation with a boy (let's call him Tay for now), and the topic of music/ bands came up. I started listing a few artists and bands I love listening to, my favourite songs and why they're my favourites. I would talk about the incredible breakdowns and harmonies and poetry of lyrics. It was full blown yapping for fifteen minutes about music (could definitely gone on longer tho). Anyway, it was Tay's turn to talk and all he said was "Yeah I really like [insert rappers name here] because his lyrics have so much meaning." AND THAT WAS IT! I wasn't even worried about the fact his favourite artist was a generic/ overhyped name in the mainstream, it was the fact that he had nothing incredible to say about why that was his favourite artist!!
He didn't go into detail about his favourite songs, the musical talent of the artist, how he found the rapper or how long he had been listening to them. And when I asked further about the lyrics having a lot of meaning, he recited to me the most shallow and basic lyrics. (I'm not going to say what they are simply because they're not important) but the meaning was as deep as a puddle. I then asked if this musician has changed his life in anyway or helped him out in any way. I kid you not. Tay responded with, "Yeah [Rapper] proved to me that you can make it big no matter where you come from"... huh????? No 'lowest point of my life' or any emotional connections to his favourite artist???? I've got emotional connections to songs from so many different times of my life. I'll go through old playlists and find songs that unlock memories for me from when I was at my lowest and loneliest because that was all I had to get me through those really hard times.
So am I too obsessed with music and are most people (or rap enthusiasts at least) so nonchalant about their favourite artists or is it completely normal to have music be such an important part of their lives?

I sometimes think these people are just hiding the fact that they're hardcore fans of a certain artist. I get why you might be a casual fan of an artist, but maybe this guy hasn't had a real emotional connection to an artist's work yet. For a long time, I'd been just a casual fan of artists, and then I found a band that I slowly fell in love with and became a huge fan because at the time I was really insecure about myself and the music was soothing (though i will admit i have a tendency to latch onto certain artist's work and hyperfixate but I'm still a huge fan of this band today). It all comes down to experimenting and finding artists that you like.
