where the old people at?

seriously, what are the 65-year-olds doing all day?

if any 20-something were to know, it would probably be me. im the sort of person who is frequently accused of having old people hobbies, but i have to disagree because i NEVER see old people doing what im doing. i go to the local yarn store and everyone there is under 40. i go to the library and everyone there is under 40. i take a walk at the dying mall just for something to do and everyone there is under 40. i have a picnic at the park and i only see dog walkers (under 40) and parents with children

and i know the problem isnt just a lack of old people in general. first of all, we should have a surplus of them now that the baby boomers are retiring. but also!!! whenever i get a chance to talk to old people about my hobbies, ill get reactions like "that's nice :) my mother/father used to do that back in the day :) im glad there are people still quilting/embroidering/writing/etc" and it takes all my energy to stop myself from saying BRO WHY ARENT YOU DOING THAT??? UR LITERALLY LIKE 65?? YOU SHOULD BE AT THE YARN STORE

the reason im ranting about this now: today i went to bingo with my parents. i thought for sure that bingo would be where the elderly population was hiding. i was definitely the youngest person there, but only because there was hardly anyone there at all. the people who were there were either under 40 or over 80. that solves the question of where the VERY old people are, but the 60-somethings still elude me. its like theyre hiding from me, which doesnt make sense because im delightful. they would know that if they picked up their crochet hook and made crafts in the park with me, but im starting to think they dont even know how to crochet at all.

that simply cannot be the case. if i could retire right now, i would be knitting little tchotchkes for everyone i know whether they wanted them or not. i would take more walks in the park. i would learn to identify birds. i would be the ultimate stereotype and i would love every second

ive tried asking old people what they've been up to lately, but usually they just tell me about how they went out for coffee with their friend 3 weeks ago. it always sounds like they had a good time, but it doesnt tell me what they do on a day-to-day basis. sometimes they tell me about an interesting facebook post they saw ("oh, you dont use facebook? strange, my grandkids dont either") or tiktok if theyre closer to my parents age ("oh, you dont use tiktok? strange, my grandkids love tiktok"). either these people are hypocrites for complaining about young people being glued to their phone, or there's some super secret old person hobby thats being hidden from me

which is so fucked up. i can knit. i watch birds. i darn my own socks. i know what an ironing board is and it doesnt intimidate me. i even go to bingo now. what more do i have to do to be allowed into the secret ultimate old people hobby?

maybe theyre all golfing? i dont wanna take up golfing. i hope im not forced to golf once i hit retirement age

anyway. im the only person on spacehey whos over the age of 21, so ill probably be the first person here to become an actual certified old person. so i swear that if i ever find out what these 60-year-olds are up to, i will report back asap. unless spacehey stops existing. or if i forget

this is soooo interesting to me because i work part time at a grocery store and most of my customers are OLD PEOPLE!!!! i work the morning shift and i get to help the sweetest old people!! from experience a lot of elderly people don't have a ton of energy & they like to be active in the morning, maybe that could be why? idkkk i also live in a city so i generally see a lot of different types of people

i guess i should clarify that i live in a rural community with a large elderly population, so i DO see a lot of old people in passing. a lot of them love to stop and chitchat, but they never seem to be doing the things im doing, aka "old people hobbies". i just wonder what theyre up to all day. maybe youre right and im not going out early enough to catch them in the act
