I need a sewing machine

I only have one of those that can be bought in the toys section (but actually work), but a dressmaker told me those are very weak, and that I should buy a "real" one. The problem is that they are very expensive. 

Does anyone know of good sewing machine models at a good price that don't take up much space? Please let me know in the comments.
