Since being in Belgium, life has definitely improved (rather an understatement considering the dumpster fire that is engulfing the United States, both metaphorically and physically (unfortunately))...
Just to think a little over three years ago, I was terrified to even think about moving out of the country. Now I cannot imagine living anywhere else. It's crazy. People here are always asking us why we moved to Belgium, why Belgium? don't you miss the United States? Can you imagine missing living in the laughing stock of the entire world? I'm often embarrassed to call myself American...
To be fair, Belgium was never even close to being on my radar for a place to visit let alone live. So yeah, why Belgium? Beer? Chocolate? oh it MUST be the waffles... Well, those are definitely perks to being here. But alas no. We didn't uproot our entire lives (in 13 suitcases, mind you) for some fancy chocolates.
COVID happened at the exact wrong time (but then again... when is the right time for a global pandemic...?). Daisie, my lovely, supportive and cutesy wife, had just gotten her PhD and was ready to venture off into the scary world of math. Get off your ath, let's do some math. But wouldn't you know it, the world was slowly shutting down and closing its doors. Not a job in sight for this math babe.
And then suddenly there was Ghent, a small historic city in the heart of Belgium, who scooped up the damsel(s) in distress and saved the day. Hastily, I agree to this transcontinental move. So.. three months until the move. So much yet so little time. How do I tell my family? Am I really on board with this? Find out next time on.... the next blog post.
