What was up with those boys who would ask you out as a prank?

I am trying to figure it out and nothing, trying to see it from their perspectives and their thought process, nope nothing. The prank wasn't even funny on both parties. The awkward silence followed by the sudden bursts of laughter from the boys and the realization you get that it was a joke and not for real.
