Diversity in MM books- and books in general

I was just on reddit, looking for some book recommendations (some of yall are vile creatures), and i stumbled upon a subreddit for MM romance books. In this subreddit someone had begun a discussion on how white authors almost exclusively never write black characters as bottoms. Now idc who bottoms, i'm more there for the plot BUT HOLY SHIT. i just had a major flashback to every single MM romance book i've ever read with black main characters or love interests AND THEY WERE ALWAYS TOPS.

Now i've done a little bit of thinking about this and this can mainly be chalked up to the media and society's portrayal of black men. That they're aggressive, animalistic and cannot show any sense of vulnerability. The portrayal of black men especially in porn only feeds this narrative. Things like BBC are incredibly popular on porn sites because of this and ultimately feeds this narrative of black men. (porn is harmful for so many other reasons but that's a conversation for another day)

Before seeing this reddit post i had never even thought or noticed tbh. I don't think about things too deeply whenever i read my silly little romance books.

With everything being said, i still think that it is important to read romance books with diverse MCs, not just racially but in every other aspect. For anyone that likes MM mafia romance books, and is looking for neurodivergent rep, Take Me Apart by Brea Alepou and Skyler Snow, is a good book. The series is the vitale brothers series. I will most probably be making a blog post about the entire vitale brothers series but yeah, Enzo (love interest) is autistic, it's not really central to the plot and based off of a few reviews i've read the representation doesn't seem to be too bad. I haven't seen many complaints.

anyways, Rina Kent is releasing Kiss the Villain this year and i am quite literally foaming at the mouth.
