Our World Decays

For my creative writing class, we had to think of a list of words relating to a prompt, then choose one of those words & expand on them. The prompt was "Secret World," so I thought of the video game I was developing, & came up with the words Shelter, Mystical, Evening, Decaying, Computer. In my game, the protag discovers a secret world. Later on in the plot, she finds out the world is decaying, and though she tries to save it at first, she starts to wonder if it's really worth saving. I find that word holds a lot of meaning, especially if it's related to our own world, so I wrote a little blurb on it.

Is our world decaying? On the news, all that's spoken is catastrophe; wildfires blazing, nations crumbling, millions wrenched into poverty. It's easy to spiral down into hopelessness as we repeatedly hear of the tragedies amassing, pulling us down into the black quicksand of dread. As the murky sands consume us, our eyes become obstructed with the void of hopelessness, and our ears are clogged with the silent noise of doom. We are beings of despair.

Wipe your face. Rub your eyes, and clear out your ears. We assume that this world is only suffering because that is all we see and hear. But I tell you, go further than that. Look to the quietest, humblest corners of world, places beyond what is presented to you in the flashy lights & loud speakers. Charities, providing meals for the thousands who hunger. Organizations striving for justice of the marginalized. People loving one another. Altruism.

And you will see, we are truly creatures of hope.
