it's 2025... waow... and that means i'm gonna try to listen to a new album every single day this year!! i also think i might start posting these on saturdays instead of fridays idk.. it might go back and forth forever. for this first week,. my cartooom cd came with an insert from the record label featuring a bunch of albums that were coming out in japan at the time (or so i assume....i do not know japanese) and i had never heard most of them, so this week i started listening to the albums that came on the insert!!

as a refresher - italicized tracks are interludes, bolded tracks are my standouts (a.k.a. a 4.5 (out of 5) or higher),  a ★ indicates my favorite song, and an × indicates my least favorite song

(p.s. i don't think i put this in the last couple weeks, but if you click on an album cover it'll take you to some more info about the album on rateyourmusic)

NEW ALBUMS

there isn't a lot this week because i've had the world's worst headache for the past few days and i have not been able to stare at a screen long enough to write so this is only january 1st and 2nd unfort... but i'm feeling better now!! and that just means you'll get a longer post next week!!!

Thunder, Lightning, Strike - The Go! Team | 2004

indietronica | alternative dance | indie rock | neo-psychedelia

★★★★

i've heard of the go! team before so it's nice to finally check them out.. idrk what i was expecting honesty but this was really great, i'm an absolute sucker for sampling. i couldn't stop moving while listening to this, it's groovy and infectious. all of the vocals are sampled and most of them have a sort of cheerleader vibe to them which i was a big fan of (and now that i'm thinking about it, i suppose it is fitting of a band called The Go! Team). if you've ever listened to and enjoyed the avalanches i really can't recommend this enough, this album gave me all the same feelings i had after listening to Since I Left You for the first time. i definitely feel inclined to check out more from them in the future.

for people who really miss the feeling of drinking an ice cold kool aid on a hot summer day at the age of Nine

Young Adults Against Suicide - Ninja High School | 2005

experimental hip hop | conscious hip hop

★★★½

with a whopping 2.89 from 50 ratings i was not excited for this one. it wasn't great but hey i expected worse. got taken off spotify unfort so had to find it on youtube. i've added the link to rateyourmusic for your convenience, no need to thank me... anyway, this album's worst sin is being low budget and a little cringe. just sounds like a group of friends having fun (not that that's inherently a bad thing). i didn't pay much attention to the lyrics because it was 11 pm but the vocal delivery wasn't the worst thing ever and the instrumentals for the most part weren't bad at all. there's honestly some pretty catchy hooks on here. i understand the low score but it may be a little bit harsh. i've definitely heard worse - in fact, i actually liked Feverish Dream and Positive Laser a lot. i could see myself being really into this if it had a higher budget or something. there are some stinkers though; Nap is a poor attempt at like a proto-death grips type thing and It's All Right to Fight is just annoying and far too long.

for rebellious homeschooled catholics

I LISTENED TO FAKEVOX AGAIN

Fakevox - Plus-Tech Squeeze Box | 2000

picopop | akishibu-kei

★★★★

this was on the insert and it's the only one i've already heard because i heart plus tech squeeze box so it gets its own section. i definitely don't like this as much as cartooom!, but they both occupy different niches in my mind. as i've said previously, cartooom! feels like getting punched in the face with glitter glue, but Fakevox is definitely more subdued. not to say it doesn't have its high energy picopop moments, but the -kei part shines through much more prominently here. i think Fakevox is probably the better album to start with if you're interested in plus-tech squeeze box. as much as i adore cartooom!, it's a lot. if you listen to this and find yourself wanting more of their high energy moments, that's when i recommend cartooom!.

for people who were kinda into hyperpop in 2020 because you thought it made you look cool and now you're actually lowkey interested in music like that

  9. Scene2-citybilly lived happily ever after→
  10. Sneaker Song!
  11. clover ×
