Meekeelee's Random Tidbits #2 - Bioluminescent Algae!

Today I will be talking about these super cool bioluminescent algae that you can find in many of the world's waters!

Bioluminescent Bays in Puerto Rico: Best Time to Go

I've always wanted to go to Puerto Rico and some of its beaches have these bioluminescent algae that causes the water to glow! Anyways here are some facts:

   - These are a type of plankton that are super tiny and can cause the surface of the the ocean to  glow at night.

   - Some places where you can see this magnificent organism include: Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico, Mudhdhoo Island, Maldives, Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, Matakatia Bay, New Zealand, and even a few beaches in the mainland USA!

   - DON'T EVER TOUCH OR SWIM IN THIS!!! It does look beautiful but bioluminescent algae can be harmful to us so you're better off just staying on shore or in a kayak. It's also harmful to pets, so keep your doggos away from them!!!

   - Evidence suggests that this organism can be a sign of changes in the environment, such as pollution and global warming (crazy!)

So whatcha think? I think this organism is soooo cool and I really hope to see this in real life on day!!!
