emo tunes reccomendations...

really loving the drive of the late 90's emo/post-hardcore bands right now. one i keep queueing up is San Diego band No Knife, namely their albums Drunk on the Moon and Hit Man Dreams, 1996 and 1997 respectively. Drunk on the Moon encapsulates a lot of that upbeat but slightly frantic  drumming that was prevalent on associated scenes at the time. something i love about No Knife, especially in these first two albums, is how measured the melodies and tempo seem to be. this is noticeable in their song 'Charades' from their second installation, where the drums and vocals alike always seem to pull back in a way that isn't plucky, but keeps the listener really attached to the lull of the rhythm. if you like No Knife's sound, i recommend also checking out these late 90's bands: The Casket Lottery, hailing from Kansas City, and Illinois emo outfit Braid.

another (one man) band i keep finding myself overplaying is James Dewees' solo project, a band called Reggie and the Full Effect. Dewees was the keyboardist for iconic 2000's emo staple The Get Up Kids, as well as a founding member/drummer of the metalcore band Coalesce. Dewees actually did work/toured with My Chemical Romance, (he talks about it here), and spent some time doing work with Leathermouth and New Found Glory. all this aside, i feel like his albums have some real gold in them and nobody is aware of it... O_o

my personal faves from his third album, Under the Tray (2004), include the tracks 'Congratulations Smack+Katy' and 'What Won't Kill You Eats Gas,' but there's one song in particular on that album that ive been playing nonstop.'Happy V-Day' is genuinely one of my most played songs rn, that driving beat and layered vocals just put me in a better mood. His song 'Get Well Soon' off the fourth album Songs Not to Get Married to was actually the first song of his that i heard, and i was immediately curious. both songs are great introductions to his overall musical vibe

i still need to listen to his first two albums, Greatest Hits and Promotional Copy. the latter already has a song on it that i like. i always feel like there's so much music and not enough time to listen to it all T_T
