i was talking about this exact thing with my friends the other day and it reminded me about how i had to put a warning on my profile to specifically NOT friend request me if your profile was high saturation/eyestrain/flashing. i dont want to diss anyone in specific because thats just rude, and i cant deny as someone who does HTML myself that getting your profile to look like that takes a lot of effort. however i still have to get this off my chest.
i find it really crazy and a massive double standard that we expect violence to be censored all the time, but rarely is there ever an expectation to censor bright/flashing images or even a way to do so if the option to add a filter does exist. i feel like this used to be the norm for obvious reasons but now its less common. this is just based on my own experiences so, i could be wrong, but from what ive seen theres very few people out there properly warning for this stuff. and again, its a double standard.
violent (and also sexual) content should absolutely have proper warnings on it, but for the most part, those arent going to hurt anybody physically. a horror movie can scare you but it probably wont actually harm you. but high saturation, eyestrain, and flashing imagery can legitimately be a health hazard! the most obvious being that flashing can trigger photosensitive epilepsy, but i also personally have a disability that's triggered by this stuff, and that's severe and debilitating chronic migraines. it's never fun to be randomly flashbanged by so much saturation and contrast that i can't even read what's on screen. it exacerbates my migraines and those migraines can leave me bedridden and nauseous from the pain.
im not some prude that thinks that people shouldnt be allowed to design things however the hell they want. if you like eyestrain-y colors and you want your art and your profile and what have you to look like that, im not going to tell you to stop. but i feel like it isnt too much to ask that you have a warning for it somewhere when someone clicks on your profile. this shit can be a legitimate health and safety hazard to me and many others who have disabilities/conditions that are triggered by this stuff. i know a lot of people have those little loading screen things on their profile, and thats enough for me to be satisfied. and also like... dont make the warning itself high saturation and difficult to read, ffs.
again not directed at anyone in particular. this just seems to be a wider problem that i've noticed. please be respectful of people's medical needs, especially if you also expect stuff like violence to have warnings and stuff on it.
