oh brain

I was using my dust devil hand vac (there is just always so much dustball action, it's a constant job and i am not a constant job kind of person) And I looked in it to see if it needed dumping and there was barely anything in there!
And.. I realized I had not put the filter back in. so the engine was just chopping up and spitting out whatever I had already sucked up!
I tried to shake the stuff out and even used another handheld to see if I could suck some of the detritus out... got the filter back in, and hopefully I didn't do too much damage.
I knew I was going to forget that thing one day.
