I haven’t written a book review since year 4 so I’m sorry if it’s dogshit
(Also ‘ll try my best to avoid spoilers but I might accidentally let some slip so sorry if I do)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/ five stars
“Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral — the hypnotic secret shape of the world. This bizarre masterpiece of horror manga is now available in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!”
Uzumaki is a horror manga written and Illustrated by Junji Ito, and in my opinion, it is SO GOOD.
First, the art. Much like in Ito’s other works, the artwork in this book is stunning. How he is able to draw such creative yet at the same time absolutely horrifying ideas and bring them to life in such a way that it is just beautiful to look at. And the fact that it is in black and white (except for a chapter or two) just adds onto the atmosphere Ito brilliantly creates.
As the story progresses, you can really feel the hopelessness of the characters - especially Shuichi - as the story progresses all the way up to the end.
In my opinion, the most horrifying chapter was mosquitos. I already hate those flying little fuckers, but this chapter just made it worse. Without spoiling, the chapter’s premise is just so delightfully horrifying that it could be genuine nightmare fuel. Just from the fact that the thing that was VERY wrong with those pregnant women within the maternity ward, including Kirie’s own cousin. And the follow up chapter just solidified its horror as a continuation of after the babies were born.
In all, you should definitely read it if you do not mind body horror - because it’s kind of fucked up. But in a good way?? Idk
Sorry if this review was bollocks idk what I’m doing 😭😭😭
